Asplenium flabellifolium (Necklace Fern)
Small fern with weak fronds which are often prostrate. Can produce rooted plantlets at the tip of the frond which are often pinnule-free for a considerable length. Pinnae are fan-shaped with toothed margins, turning a darker green with age. Found on moist, rocky ground, sheltered by rock crevices and grasses.
Spore-bearing bodies are found underneath each fertile pinnule. The location of spore bodies differentiates this fern from Lindsaea linearis (Screw Fern).
Calochlaena dubia (False Bracken)
Coarse, open spreading fern reaching a height of 2m. Large broadly triangular yellow-green 3-4 pinnate leaves. Usually found in the moist areas around Chandlers Hill.
Can be distinguished from the common Pteridium esculentum (Austral Bracken) by its softer fronds and hairs on the main rib of the leaf.
Lindsaea linearis (Screw Fern)
Small erect fern with pale green fronds 5-20cm long. Pinna are paired, spaced closely along the rachis, and fan-shaped to 10mm long. Pinnule usually wider than it is long. Fertile fronds are narrower and longer. Can be found growing among other plants off Hansens Track.
Sterile fronds are non-spore forming fronds. The pinnae ("leaves") have a rounded fan shape.
Fertile fronds show bulging spore-forming bodies along the outer edges of the pinnae. The pinnae are more triangular in shape.
Microsorum pustulatum ssp. pustulatum (Kangaroo Fern)
Rock-dwelling or epiphytic fern with creeping or climbing rhizome 3-7mm thick. Fronds widely separated, variable in shape and size, 5-50cm long. Frond lobe margins wavy.
Can be found on the southern slopes of Chandlers Hill near its summit growing among rocks.
Pteridium esculentum (Austral Bracken)
Single erect frond up to 1.5m high. Fronds are 3-4 pinnate, dark green and leathery.
This fern is poisonous to stock animals. Can be found all over Chandlers Hill.
Can be distinguished from Calochlaena dubia (False Bracken) by its darker green fronds which feel more leathery.
