In January 1952, the Coconut Research and Development Project financed under the FAO-PHILCUSA Assistance Program was created in the Bureau of Plant Industry. The project has for its objectives (1) to provide means and facilities for intensifying research works on coconut diseases with emphasis on the Cadang-cadang disease, (2) to conduct studies on the various phases of coconut rehabilitation and development including the use of fertilizer, cover crops, adoption of improved cultural methods to increase production and improvement of the quality of Philippine copra, and (3) to help farmers control coconut pests and diseases. The first objective was caried out in Guinobatan Experiment Station in Guinobatan, Albay, while the third was done in different coconut growing provinces of the country.
For the second objective, Quezon Coconut Experiment Station (QCES) was established on May 29, 1952. The station carried out experiments on intercropping, fertilizer application, cover cropping, and crop improvement. Results of which were published and subsequently disseminated to coconut planters.
In June 1968, the station was renamed as Tiaong Experiment Station (TES) to carry on the basic functions of the Bureau of Plant Industry. With the integration of the Department of Agriculture in the early 80s, the station became one of the research outreach stations of the Southern Tagalog Integrated Research Center (STIARC) and was known as Quezon Agricultural Experiment Station (QAES).
With the 2014 implementation of rationalization program across government agencies, QARES was renamed Quezon Agricultural Research and Experiment Station (QARES). The Regional Swine Production and Breeding Center (RSPBC) was also integrated to the station and functions as its Livestock Unit.
DA-QARES is located at Brgy. Lagalag, Tiaong, Quezon. It has a total land area of 30.2 Ha. with an elevation of 30 feet ASL.
