What Should I Have On Me When Running?
New to running or new to marathon or ultra training? Here are some things that will be helpful, or necessary, to make it through the run.
Identification
is necessary and important for any runner. You never know what could happen. Having a Road ID is a small and light things to consider when getting ready for your run. This can be in the form of a bracelet, shoe tag or plaque that slides right onto your watch. Information like your name, age, city, allergies and emergency contact are a few things that can be added onto your identification tag.
Cell phones
are helpful not just for preventing yourself from getting lost, calling for help in case of an emergency and playing music when you need a little inspiration or motivation. If you don’t like to run with something in your hand, try this band.
Bone conducting head phones
if you’d like to listen to music while running, these are a great way to still be aware of your surroundings and rock out to your favorite music. Because the sound occurs based on vibration, it skips the ear canal completely and you can still hear other things while your brain is processing vibrations into music. If interested, these are the top pair to buy.
Water and electrolyte packs
hydration is important all year round to keep your body healthy and functioning. Your body is over 50% water weight. When you sweat, you are losing the fluids necessary to keep your muscles working. Water replenishes the volume of fluids you lost in your sweat and electrolytes to help with muscle contraction and prevent cramps. I am a fan of Liquid IV, hydrates you quickly, gives you your electrolytes back and less sugary than a sports drink. Check out some fun flavors here.
Gels and goos
Gels and goos are great options for convenient and quick energy when out running. Some have caffeine and some don’t, it is more of a preference for you. Marathons take them either every 3 miles or every 30 minutes based on preference. Some have cafeine, some have gut health, etc. Try these great flavors with lots of health benefits.
Run belt
these small adjustable belts can hold your keys, ID, credit cards and phone. Maybe some gels if you’re bringing some on a run. These are some essential things that hopefully don’t get left behind. If meeting for a run with friends or a running group you need to put your car keys in a safe place. I would tie my car key to my shoelaces so I don’t lose them but I also drive a 2001 Corolla. I don’t have a key fob attached, so I could. Here's a great affordable one here.
