Academic Advising

Academic Advising is a time when students meet individually with their counselor to discuss course selections for the following year.  Counselors will discuss teacher recommendations, students' interests and strengths, as well as post-secondary plans to help students choose courses that best suit them and their goals.

This is the time for students to closely consider what classes will suit them best. Conversations with teachers, participating in the Curriculum Fair, and attending Curriculum Night are critical components of choosing the right courses. After early March it is challenging to change course selections and after June it may not be possible. (See more information in Changing Course Selections below)

Timeline

Changing Course Selections/Classes

Any change can be made up until March 11th

After March 11th until June 1st changes can be made on a space available basis.  Some courses may not run if there's not enough interest and other courses may be closed if they are over-enrolled. We will maintain a waitlist for those courses and changes will be made if space becomes available. It is important that students choose alternate electives to be used in case of closed or overenrolled classes.

Once school starts in August the only changes that can be made are to correct errors. For example, if a student takes Algebra 1 in Summer School but is placed in Algebra 1 then the course can be changed to Geometry.  Any level changes (IB to Honors or Honors to Standard) or other requested changes will be decided by a process communicated next fall but could require students to remain in their classes until October.  It is very difficult to change classes starting in August because our school has been staffed according to course selections made by students in the spring. This is a county process over which SLHS has no control.

We will NOT consider changes due to teacher preference.
