Dual Enrollment

Dual Enrollment (DE) allows students to get both high school and college credit for the same class. The classes are taught here at South Lakes by FCPS teachers who have also been certified to teach the course by the college as well. The number of college credits the student will earn through a dual enrollment course is determined by the college or university. Students enrolled in a dual enrollment course may pay college tuition; however, because FCPS provides the instructor as well as the facility, the tuition is significantly discounted from what a student would pay if they took the course at the college or university. . Most colleges have a section on their website for Transfer or Dual Enrollment courses to show what courses they will accept. Dual Enrollment courses are another way that students can show rigor in their transcript and prepare for the work of a college level course.

Currently we have Geospatial Analysis which is a science course open to seniors that is dual enrolled through James Madison University. Through George Mason University we offer Multivariable Calculus/Linear Algebra. The paperwork and payment for JMU and GMU is handled in the class with the teacher during the school year. Students can choose whether or not to receive college credit, although the majority do.

We have several classes that are offered through Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) that are currently at no cost to students. NOVA does have several steps and criteria for students to be able to take a DE course. Here's a link to the Checklist for Students. Students must Apply to NOVA and if students are under 18 a parental consent will be needed before students can complete the process.

NOVA process will be updated after Feb 8th

Our current courses offered through NOVA are:

  • English 12 DE

  • World History 1 DE

  • Entrepreneurship DE

  • Teachers for Tomorrow 1 and 2 DE
