I know it's sometimes difficult to be a student because you're rarely ever just a student. Lots of students work or play sports. Many students are responsible for taking care of someone else. Every single student has obligations beyond the classroom, and sometimes it's hard to accomplish all of your goals, academic or otherwise, without a little help. Faculty (including me), counselors, student tutors, and more are ready to help you reach your educational goals. We can help you find the right class, apply for scholarships, and even learn study skills. I have included a list of some helpful resources and services below. If you don’t see what you're looking for or aren't sure what you need, please reach out and ask me!
As your instructor, I will always do my best to help you succeed in this course. I will be providing all of the content and assignments through Canvas, and sometimes, you may encounter a difficult concept or detailed instructions. Read through everything closely, and I encourage you to regularly attend our weekly class sessions. During these class meetings, I hope you will ask questions and share ideas. I will also be available for one-on-one meetings during Student Hours.
Student hours, also known as office hours, are times dedicated to you. I can meet with students one-on-one to talk about assignments, readings, or other student experiences. I don't currently have a designated time set aside for student hours. Instead, I invite you to set up an appointment—whenever works for you!—to meet with me one-on-one to discuss specific matters that concern you. I can offer help, advice, or just listen. These appointments can be scheduled virtually to accommodate your needs.
Remember that we are a class. I encourage you to make connections with other students. It will be easier to succeed if you have a support group.

The Cypress Writing Center (CWC) is the only academic support on campus specifically designed to promote your development and success as a college writer. Our highly qualified tutors and faculty mentors are available to assist you in person and online with writing projects for any course and any level of instruction. As a student in English 100, you are required to utilize CWC services at any stage of your writing: understanding writing assignment directions; getting started and generating ideas; creating outlines; checking to see that your writing meets the directions specified by your instructor; exploring ways to support, develop, and expand your ideas; figuring out how and what to revise; editing; identifying and correcting errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation; and adhering to format and style guides (MLA, APA, etc.). While tutors will not “fix” or “correct” your writing, they will help you become conscious of, and proactive about, particular error patterns that emerge in your written work. Additionally, the CWC maintains a library of reference texts and take-home handouts.
Come visit the Cypress Writing Center (CWC) for any of the following services:
one-on-one tutoring in-person or virtually via Zoom
activities, worksheets, and resources to help students improve in any area of their writing needs
activities and guidance in how to be a successful student, such as study and test-taking strategies, procrastination and time management help
a quiet, safe space to study with tutors available if you need support

The library is a fantastic resource for students, and provides a variety of support services for your academic needs. All of these services, as well as their operating hours and contact info, can be found on the Library website. They provide services both in person and online. You will need to use the library databases for research in this class. If you need help, librarians are ready to chat with you. Librarians will be maintaining the chat/text/email service, and you can schedule in person appointments with them as well. So if you have questions, they will try to answer you as soon as they can. To get additional research help, you can also access the library research guides directly through our Canvas course using the Canvas navigation menu. This is another great way to check for updates and contact librarians directly if you have questions! You can also make a one-on-one appointment with a librarian specifically for help with your research.
We actually have our very own Librarian who is dedicated to assisting students with research needs! His name is Professor Billy Pashaie, and he can be reached by email at wpashaie@cypresscollege.edu and by chat here.

Cypress is committed to supporting the wellbeing of all our students. The Cypress College Health Center is located in the Gym on the 1st floor. They can be reached by phone at (714) 484-7361. Please leave a message; all messages will be answered. If you or another student you know needs support, please do not hesitate to use the following resources:
Physical and Mental Health Services: Current Cypress students may receive free or very low-cost physical and mental healthcare at the Student Health Center. Please check the Health Center website, or call (714) 484-7361 for more information.
Food Security: In an effort to help students focus more on succeeding in school and less on where their next meal is coming from, Cypress College is happy to offer Food Pantry services throughout the school year. The Food Pantry aims to address the basic needs of our students by collecting and distributing non-perishable food items, educating the campus community about hunger and food insecurity issues, and collaborating with others to connect students with additional resources on and off campus. Students may enroll in the service in the Student Activities Center. Please bring your student I.D. and a printout of your class schedule (a minimum of 3 units is required), and inquire at the reception desk or see Student Activities Director David Okawa. Applications must be completed at the Student Activities Center. Please visit the Food Pantry website or call (714) 484-7199 for more information.
In case of emergency call 911 or call Campus Safety at (714) 484-7387. You may also contact Campus Safety by using the call boxes located around campus. The Cypress College Campus Safety Office is located in the Business Building, in Lot 1. Trained safety officers are on duty 24/7 to provide a safe environment for students and employees. In the event of an emergency on campus, you should also familiarize yourself with the Emergency Procedures.
Disability Support Services (DSS) coordinates all academic accommodations for students with documented disabilities at Cypress College. If you have, or think you might have, a disability that impacts your educational experience in this class, please contact DSS to determine your eligibility for accommodations. The office is located on the first floor of the Cypress College Complex, Room 100. They can be reached by emailing dss-students@cypresscollege.edu or by phone at (714) 484-7104. For students who have already been determined eligible for DSS services, please provide the instructor with the proper form from DSS in a timely manner, at the beginning of the semester and at least one week prior to the verified and identified need. It's always a good idea to check in with your professor to make sure they have received your accommodation notice at the start of the semester.
