These are the main skills we will work on building together that I hope you will acquire and cultivate as a successful student upon completion of this course.
Demonstrate an ability to write effective claims and provide well-reasoned and logical support in a research essay.
First, you have to understand that you are absolutely 100% capable of succeeding in this course; it just takes time and commitment. So please make sure that you set aside enough time for all aspects of this class. There will be a considerable amount of assigned readings to engage with over the next sixteen weeks. There are also lots of writing assignments; since this is a writing course after all!
You will need time to work through the weekly modules, which include video lectures, content, and assignments. You should also attend our weekly class sessions; during this time, I will unpack the content we've covered, thoroughly explain assignment instructions, and answer any questions students may have. Don't forget! You will need to set aside a lot of time to complete your assignments, so please be sure to do so.
The guidelines below are great ways to ensure you will get the most out of the course and achieve success.
• Please complete the assigned readings and coursework by the due dates posted on Canvas. This is the only way to guarantee a quality class discussion full of meaningful insights. I urge you to develop your own thoughts on the subject matter and share them with all of us as your active contribution to the course content.
• All assignments will be submitted through Canvas. So, please pay careful attention to ALL instructions listed in each assignment. All of our course content including additional resources and course notes, will be listed on Canvas as well.
Read and critically evaluate college-level material from a variety of sources.
Identify and analyze the structure of arguments.

Identify common formal and informal fallacies of language and thought.
Distinguish and use both deductive and inductive reasoning.
Distinguish factual statements from judgmental statements and knowledge from opinion.
Draw sound inferences from data given in a variety of forms.

Use research methods to discover and evaluate outside sources for use in support of his/her argument.
Compose thesis-driven arguments, using MLA format, that address a variety of rhetorical situations, including interpretation, evaluation, and analysis, supporting them with a variety of appropriate textual evidence.
Demonstrate continued development in writing correct and sophisticated college-level English prose.
Identify some of the deliberate abuses and biases of rhetoric so that the student-writer can identify them in general discourse and in writing.
Write research essays using appropriate research methods in correct MLA form and style
