Summary: Story of a plane crash off Martha’s Vineyard where only two people survive – a four year old boy, and a down on his luck painter. Painter Scott Burroughs – who gets on the plane by chance – swims to safety (about 11 miles) with the boy on his back. Burroughs goes into hiding because of the media attention and speculation. Interesting look at how the media can distort truth.

Summary: Story of J.D. Vance’s personal experience growing up as a Hillbilly in Ohio. He was dirt poor with a very unstable family life – save his grandparents. Vance talks about the multiple stepfathers, the bouncing houses, the addicted mother and often violent circumstances he was raised in. Reminiscent of the Glass Castle – though not as well written. (He skips around a lot). Gives really nice tribute to the Marines and interesting look at navigating Yale Law School. He is a true outlier of his upbringing. Interesting fact – one of his mentors at Yale was Amy Chua – Tiger Mom! Loved her book.
