From scenic coastal stretches to shaded rail trails, the Cumberland Trails Association offers some of the most enjoyable bike routes in Northern Nova Scotia. Ideal for gravel, hybrid, and touring bikes, these routes connect small towns, peaceful forests, and beaches, with plenty of stops along the way for food, photos, and rest.
Begin your ride in Oxford and head east along the Shortline toward Pugwash, about 30 km one way. Along the route, you’ll find smooth trail conditions and scenic views. Once in Pugwash, take time to explore the waterfront, visit the Thinkers Lodge National Historic Site, or relax on one of the area’s warm, sandy beaches. You’ll also find great food options, including The Roadhouse Restaurant located right on Trail 263 (The Pugwash Salt Express). Stay overnight at a local Airbnb or at the trail-adjacent Hillcrest View Motel, or make it a round trip by riding back to Oxford the same day.
For another great option, start again in Oxford and ride 40 km to the coastal village of Wallace. This route follows Trail 265 (the Quarry Branch Trail), offering a gentle ride with scenic highlights. In Wallace, stop for a meal at Wiley’s by the Wharf, known for fine dining with a view. Other nearby amenities include a convenience gas bar and a visit to the area’s famous sandstone quarry. This route can easily be extended into an overnight trip or combined with other sections of the Shortline.
Want to keep going? The rest of the Shortline offers great options for longer cycling adventures. Continue on to Tatamagouche, River John, Scotsburn, and Pictou. Tatamagouche is packed with trail-side stops like the Train Station Inn, Tatamagouche Brewing Company, Appleton Chocolates, and Big Al’s Restaurant. River John has a lovely waterfront and the popular Overstreet Café, while Scotsburn is home to Deb’s Hidden Café. End your ride in Pictou, where you’ll find scenic harbour views, restaurants, and cultural stops like the DeCoste Arts Centre and Hector Quay.
