Attendance Policy
Please do not come to work if you have a fever or any other symptoms related to COVID-19.
If a student has a valid documented excuse, their shift must be put on the sub board at least one week in advance with proper documentation given to the coordinator in order to avoid a strike for a call-off.
For a shift starting before 9 am, the employee must call off one hour in advance. Improper call-offs will result in one strike.
For a shift starting after 9 am, the employee must call off three hours in advance. Improper call-offs will result in one strike.
Fest and special weekends are worth double strikes and are non-removable. Any employee who properly calls off or is late will receive two non-removable strikes and any employee who no-call no-shows on a fest weekend shift receives 4 strikes and is therefore automatically terminated.
Double Strike Weekends/Days
Double strike weekends and days are special days throughout the year when employees are more likely to call off due to special events. Consequently, unexcused call offs or no call/no shows on these days will result in double the usual amount of strikes. We encourage employees to utilize the sub board and/or find other employees to cover shifts if they are unable to work on a double strike day.
Double strike days include:
Opening weekend
Parent's weekend
Homecoming
Finals week/Commencement
Halloween (block party weekend)
Dad's weekend
Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Sib's weekend
All fest weekends
Reopening days following Thanksgiving, winter, and spring break
Mom's weekend
Easter weekend
Finals Week
Each employee will be required to work at least two shift during finals week. Exams scheduled during an employee's shift must be communicated to that locations' coordinator at least one week prior to your exam/shift. Each employee should be aware of the dates of their finals as they receive their syllabus at the beginning of each semester. Those who are unsure when an exam is scheduled may find a final exam schedule below.
Holidays & Breaks
During holidays and break periods, cafe hours are limited and shifts are filled on a volunteer basis. Employees that will be in Athens during breaks may schedule shifts with a coordinator. If an employee picks up shifts during holidays and breaks, they will be responsible for following the same attendance and call-off policies listed above.
Academic Calendar & Finals Week Schedule
For employees who wish to review the current academic calendar and finals week schedule, it can be found here: Calendars
Personal Days
Things come up. Sometimes you need extra time to study or are not feeling the best or life happens. We value each of our employees and their dedication to our team, but sometimes you just need a day.
Each student begins the semester with one Personal Day (free call off). This is a use it or lose it benefit. Students wishing to use their personal day must follow all of the procedures outlined below:
Students must follow the above call-off procedures.
Personal Days will not be permitted on double strike weekends/days or the opening day of the semester.
Personal Days may not be used during any Finals Weeks.
These are offered on a first come, first served basis. Only two Personal Days per location will be permitted in one day.
Management has the right to suspend the Personal Day policy at any time. Please respect this benefit.
Scheduling
Returning employee scheduling for each semester is completed approximately 3-4 weeks before the end of the prior semester and is based off of a hierarchy system that takes into account when an employee was hired and how many hours they have worked.
New hires will schedule shifts as they are hired and will chose from any open shifts still available.
Dress Code
Café workers are to purchase a uniform shirt and hat. The shirt and hat are to be maintained by the employee. Failure to do so will result in discipline.
Name tags, employees will be provided with their first name tag free of charge. When filling out the name tag, it should have your first name and if you choose to add your pronoun. Each replacement name tag will be $1.50
Face coverings are not required at this time, however if you choose to wear one it cannot depict anything that violates the OHIO University student code of conduct or display any alcohol or drug related images/brands/etc. For more information, please see the Safety Work Rules.
Fully enclosed, flat soled shoes, jeans or khakis in good repair and socks are to be worn at all times.
Long hair, specified as being below the ear or longer, must be securely tied back and through the hat hole. No exceptions.
Pins, ribbons, patches, etc. are not permitted on the issued uniform hat.
Café workers may wear a Culinary Services hoodie, Café hoodie, or crew neck sweatshirt. No other sweatshirts or jackets are allowed.
