Writing 12 Assessment Criteria

 

A – An A is a mark of excellence and of excelling. The student is capable of producing high quality, polished and completed work.

·   An A student is one that continually pursues perfection in work yet recognizes that perfection is unattainable.

·   The student is focused on what improvements they can continue to make in their pursuit of mastery of writing, and they regularly make a habit of writing, not just for the class.

·   The student regularly challenges themselves, and writes outside of their comfort zone to find growth and improvement.

·   The student readily seeks feedback in hopes of improving and finding new inspiration.

·   The student readily gives feedback and help to all others.

 

An A+ (100%) meets all of these criteria to the fullest degree.

An A (95%) meets the criteria with only slight weakness in one area.

An A- (90%) meets the criteria with only weaknesses in two areas.

 

B – A B is a mark of accomplishment. The student is able to produce high quality work, but sometimes struggles to see a piece of writing through to completion for logistical or structural reasons.

·   The student is one who has shown much growth in their writing.

·   They occasionally take risks to challenge themselves, but also occasionally fall back on the familiar to maintain confidence.

·   The student is still focused on improvement of writing, and occasionally seeks feedback on work to gain improvement and insight.

·   The student usually gives feedback and help to others, or to others they are comfortable with.

 

A B+ (85%) meets all of these criteria to the fullest degree.

A B (80%) meets the criteria with only weakness in one area.

A B- (75%) meets the criteria with only weaknesses in two areas.

 

C+ - A C+ is a mark of progression. The struggle to see work through to completion is much greater, but good work is still accomplished.

·   The student is showing some growth with their writing.

·   More frequently they fall back on the familiar to maintain confidence, but they take the occasional challenge to try new styles or genres.

·   The student seeks feedback only with much prompting, and is very cautious in what they share.

·   The student is reluctant to give feedback, but will if coached or prompted.

 

High C+ (72%) meets all of these criteria to the fullest degree.

Low C+ (67%) meets the criteria with only weakness in one or more area.

 

C  - A C is a mark of beginning. Work is often incomplete, or still very much in rough form.

·   The student is just beginning to identify as a writer, and has yet to show much growth.

·   The student stays well in their comfort zone and is just developing confidence as a writer.

·   Student is hesitant to seek feedback.

·   Student is hesitant or resistant to give feedback.

 

High C (65%) meets all of these criteria to the fullest degree.

Low C (60%) meets the criteria with only weakness in one or more areas.

 

I – An I mark is an incomplete. The student is not making the minimal commitments of the course in terms of completion of work, often due to poor attendance, or the inability to see things through.
