If a Cub Scout has completed the second grade (or is 9 years old), the scout may start earning the Bear rank.
Bear Scouts are old enough to complete adventures on their own, with adult guidance and supervision. Family involvement is still needed for the den to be successful even though the scouts are being given more responsibility. You will continue to see the self-confidence and maturity that started in the Wolf Den grow during this year.
This part of the Scouting Trail is intended to take one school year, preparing the scout to begin Webelos adventures after third grade is completed.
Tip: Remember that the Cub Scout motto of Do Your Best is central to the program. There is no level of competence or skill required to complete adventures. Putting in personal effort and having fun with fellow scouts is success.
Bear Scouts do adventures described in their Bear handbook that advance them towards their Bear rank. By completing seven adventures, the Bear rank is earned.
This includes the six required adventures, plus one elective adventure. The elective adventure can be different for each scout, and a scout can earn as many as they want.
All Bear Scouts must also complete the Cyber Chip requirements.
The BSA teamed up with content expert NetSmartz®, part of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children® and training expert for many law enforcement agencies.
Netsmartz® has created a Scouting portal showcasing Cyber Chip resources, including grade-specific videos, for each level.
The Cyber Chip videos can be found at the BSA Cyber Chip Website
