Twine is a simple and very useful online/offline interactive fiction writing software. Yet, don't be fooled because its utility and versatility for other uses can be easily overlooked. Even though Twine's original intent was to help writers plan, visually map out and then write interactive, nonlinear fiction stories, its features make it a very versatile, almost ideal, tool to create visual layouts of almost any kind of branching narrative or inter-connected ideas, concepts or topics. These inter-connections can then be explored easily to see if those branchings or connections hold up under scrutiny.
It is a capability of Twine's interface that makes it an astoundingly simple way for teachers, instructional designers, students, creative writers and others to VISUALLY and INTERACTIVELY:
Plan and create storyboards for instructional projects, lessons, and tutorials where choices and consequences drive learning
Create branching scenarios involving interactive narrative
Define and plot out creative story development points, arcs, and intersections
Layout, define and connect concept maps or mind-maps using interactive nodes that can be easily explored
Collaborate with others by exchanging and reviewing Twine's output files
Twine can be used as a desktop application or online at Twine's website--without even registering for anything. It exports projects in HTML format, which easily integrates with TITANium or Adobe Captivate. Twine also outputs review text documents that team collaborators such as subject matter experts or co-writers can review. These output files also can be used for assessment, if Twine is used for instructional purposes. As with many of the other tools listed in this section, Twine is stable, well-maintained and features a well documented User Guide. It is FREE to use as open source software without the need to register an account.
