Women-Focused Programming
in the Lyceum Series
in the Lyceum Series
Starting in the spring of 1975, the Lyceum operated as a series of programs that offered lectures, demonstrations, discussions, theatrical productions, and film showings covering a variety of subjects on the campus of Clayton Junior College (CJC). A four-member committee headed by Robert Taylor, former Director of Student Activities, presented the series to the campus community. Speakers for the series included CJC faculty members and nationally-known guest speakers. The committee’s goal was to develop programs that “stimulate the learning process... the Lyceum program is entertainment but it’s educational entertainment,” Taylor stated in a 1982 article appearing in the Clayton Sun newspaper. By 1978 female enrollment outpaced male enrollment at CJC (click here to access two articles discussing the growth in female enrollment). This growth seems to have influenced the decision to included female guest speakers and topics for many Lyceum programming events.
