For this project, I explored how social media affects our society and our own physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.
This quiz made me realize how reliant I am on social media! The results stated,
You're fairly reliant on social media, but there are far worse culprits! Still, it's good to be reminded that UK adults spend an average of 8 hrs 41 mins on screens every day, and 4 hours of that on smartphone apps alone (mainly social media). That's about a third of each day checking apps. Do you need to rethink your social media habits and the amount of time you spend scrolling?
This quiz was a good reminder to put down my phone. I don't need to check my social media as often as I do. In the future, my goal is to spend less time on my phone, because it usually ends up becoming a distraction to the things that are important in my life.
This statistic is particularly interesting to me. Although most Americans agree that social media is negatively impacting the country, they still continue to use it as a tool in their everyday life. Does social media really do more harm than good?
In my opinion, social media is a great tool that can be used for connection, education, and positive change. It has the potential to amplify important voices and build supportive communities. However, many people lack the skills or awareness to engage thoughtfully. As a result, many people often unintentionally contribute to widespread misinformation, which reinforces the very negativity they criticize. Without intentional use and digital literacy, a platform designed for good can easily become a source of harm.
By completing this project, I learned that social media affects individuals in different ways depending on how it's used. If you're cognizant about your screen time and you engage thoughtfully, social media has the potential to have a positive influence in your everyday life. However, excessive or unintentional use can lead to negative outcomes. Overall, this project helped me better understand the importance of balance and intentionality when using social media platforms.
