The purpose of this project is to view how social media impacts our society. In what ways is it helpful? Can social media use become unhealthy?
My results from the Am I Addicted to Social Media Quiz did not surprise me. I am aware that my social media use is more than I would like it to be. My results stated:
"You're fairly reliant on social media, but there are far worse culprits! Still, it's good to be reminded that UK adults spend an average of 8 hrs. 41 mins on screens every day, and 4 hours of that on smartphone apps alone (mainly social media). That's about a third of each day checking apps. Do you need to rethink your social media habits and the amount of time you spend scrolling?"
I have recently started to, and will continue to, check my daily/weekly screen time as I would like to decrease it especially for apps.
An interesting fact I found on this website is that YouTube is still one of the most widely used online social platforms. To me this is surprising since as social media has advanced, a lot of YouTube's features have been incorperated into other apps. Personally, I don't use YouTube very much and definitely not daily.
In my opinion, social media has had a negative impact on our society. One of the largest issues that impacts me as well is mental health decline with use of social media. Comparing to other's lives, bullying, and the loss of individuality is common. Social media has become addicting, some spending hours online given false portrayals of how they should be living their life- leading to depression.
Through this project I have been able to assess my own personal social media use and whether it is a healthy amount or not. As I expected, my use is higher than I would like it to be. Although, it is that way for a lot of our society as well. We are the only ones that can help ourselves with changing these habits.
