For this project, I first had to complete the Cybersecurity training with 100% on all quizzes. My certification is to the left. After receiving my certification, I had to research two different examples of cybersecurity articles in the news and evaluate the sources.
In May of 2024, a large phishing scam went around the DMV area pretending to be the large company E-ZPass. A phishing scam is when a thief lures individuals into entering personal information into a website they created. In this instance, scammers were pretending to be toll collectors and sending mass emails/texts out stating that drivers had overdue tolls with a fake link. This phishing scam affected over 2,000 people and their money. We can help prevent this by deleting the texts, not clicking on any links, and reporting these texts.

In January of 2023 there was a large ransomware attack on a Maryland hospital. A ransomware attack is a type of malware that prevents you from accessing devices and data by encrypting the files. This attack exposed patients' names, social security numbers, health insurance and medical record information. The breach exposed over 30,000patient records to hackers. A lawsuit has since been filed for $2.25 million due to their negligence & putting them at risk for such an attack. Ways to prevent this include installing anti-malware and/or encryption.
Through this lesson, I have learned that there are so many ways you can be taken advantage of online. From Phishing scams to large-scheme ransomware attacks, you are never inevitable of being a victim. It is important to practice privacy and safety when you are online to limit the possibilities of being a victim.
