For this project, I explored social media's impact on my daily life and on society as a whole.
After taking the "Am I Addicted to Social Media?" Quiz I was not surprised to learn that I use social media a lot. However, four hours a day sounds like a lot when you put it all together. The results stated,
"You're fairly reliant on social media, but there are far worse culprits! Still, it's good to be reminded that UK adults spend an average of 8 hrs 41 mins on screens every day, and 4 hours of that on smartphone apps alone (mainly social media). That's about a third of each day checking apps. Do you need to rethink your social media habits and the amount of time you spend scrolling?"
I think I can reduce the amount of time I spend on social media everytime by deleting apps I don't use to keep in touch with people I know personally, for example Twitter and Snapchat.
The most interesting statistics from the article is the age gaps between people who use different social media apps. This is interesting to me because I used to be way more interested in Instagram and Snapchat when I was in high school. Now, I prefer Facebook and Twitter because more of my peers are on there, which aligns with the shown statistics.
Social media has completely changed our society. My perspective is skewed because I grew up with social media and I don't remember a time before Facebook. From my perspective, social media has changed us into a performative society. Everything has to be picture perfect, and it's more important that something looks good than that it feels good. We are also constantly being inundated with information without being given the tools to determine it's validity. Social media has also connected us on a global scale like never before. I have friends now that I would barely speak to without social media. However, we are walking down a dark path as a society of being over informed with misinformation, and I fear it will divide us irrevocably.
Through this assignment I learned that I use social media fairly average compared to my peers. This information was a little surprising because I assumed I would be on the higher side. This lead me to conclude that we are all heavily addicted to social media as a society, and the problem is only getting worse.
