Project 2 was all about creating a treasure chest, we had to select an image of a treasure chest and do our best to recreate it as a 3D model. I went ahead and chose this treasure chest to recreate because I liked its simplistic design with complex elements like the lock.
The project itself was not too complicated, learning how to use Maya's tools correctly was the main challenge. Oh, and getting Maya to actually work and not crash multiple times was also difficult. The hardest parts to design were the handles on the sides and the lock on the front. I had to create the handles using a combination of cylinders and cut toruses. The lock started out life as a cylinder that I hand shaped and then used half a torus as a locking loop. One strange problem I ran into had to do with copy and pasting items, if your not too careful copies can double up on each other causing multiple layers that clip through other layers. You can only recognize this problem by rendering the footage. I also created the treasure by using models for both the gold and revolvers, which can be located at www.free3d.com
