Dr Emma Senior

I am a Senior Lecturer within Northumbria University’s Nursing, Midwifery and Health department.  I am a registered nurse and specialist community public health nurse. As well as teaching, I am also a member of the Northern Hub for Veterans & Military Families Research, Northumbria University.  My research interests are with military families specifically the experiences of military spouses.

I am in the final year of writing up my PhD research at Northumbria University which explored the experiences of military spouses who have lived alongside a UK serving partner with a mental health issue. From preliminary exploration of the topic, there was limited literature available. This identified a gap in the existing body of knowledge specifically regarding partners of UK serving personnel.  Adopting a narrative approach, I carried out two in-depth interviews with nine military spouses. I was interested in the lived experience prior to, during and post diagnosis/treatment of a mental health issue to understand the impact along with identifying the challenges and enablers which help military spouses in their relationship.

As a member of the Northern Hub, I am involved in other projects such as Social prescribing for the Armed Forces Community.

Prior to my PhD, I completed an MSc Academic & Professional Learning; Northumbria University and BSc (Hons) Promoting Practice Effectiveness (Public Health/Health Visiting).
