I am currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Political Science at Bilkent University. I also serve as the project assistant for the EU Horizon-funded research project titled “The Islamic Intellectual Field and Political Theorizing in Turkey: Toward an Anthropology of Political Thought.” Prior to my Ph.D. study, I obtained two MA degrees in Sociology from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), Paris and Higher School of Economics (HSE), Moscow. Before beginning my academic career, I graduated from Kuleli Military Highschool and left the Turkish Military Academy to pursue an academic career as an independent civilian, which not only became a turning point in my life, but also prompted me to cultivate my knowledge and experience at the Academy for academic purposes.
My primary research interests center on examining militarism and military culture within the contexts of human geography, everyday life politics, gender, religion (Islam), modernity, nationalism and citizenship, all approached with a critical perspective. Specifically, my Ph.D. dissertation focuses on the exploration of masculinity, a fundamental aspect of Turkish military culture, within the everyday life situations of military families. The goal of my research is to comprehend the role and significance of military culture and militarism in the everyday life routines in Türkiye. My research is mainly interdisciplinary and ethnographic. Additionally, I am interested in studying physical and symbolic construction of public spaces and social movements.
