While working at Steele Memorial library I wore many hats. I delivered adult and teen programs, cataloged incoming items, processed incoming items, provided collection development for the entire YA section of the library, and repaired damaged items. There are many other duties I performed, but as Librarians we almost expect to do a little of everything. The following are some of the programs that I delivered.
I applied for this grant that was provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association. We decided to apply for the $3000 grant and were 1 of 7 library systems in NC to receive the funding. I planned all of the programs which included instructor led viewings of the PBS documentary Latino Americans: 500 Years of History and cultural programs such as a performances by the Ballet Folklorico de Colores. Below you will find a link to a newsletter by the Friends of the Wayne County Libraries which highlights the program.
We see many adult users struggle every day with their typing skills; I decided that it might be useful to provide a short course on keyboarding for our adult population. I was able to find a web-based course that walked through the home-keys and beyond and also kept a record of the students' progress for the instructor. I met with the students every other week for guidance and encouragement but they were able to practice their skills at the library and at home on their own time as well.
We provided a class presented by an instructor from the Wayne County Family Y to present an hour long class on useful stretches and breathing techniques that could be done from a chair.
Every month we hosted craft and a movie for teens. Here are a few pictures of some of the crafts that we made!
The Goldsboro YA Librarian and I worked with a local Girl Scout troop to help them earn their book artist badge. My colleague went over the different parts of the book, and I demonstrated how to repair damaged spines and put on new book jacket covers. Then the girls were able to make their own books.
