The Diversity Style Guide:
A Webpage and Book for Inclusive Teachers
Where to Find It
The Diversity Style Guide can be found online. There is also a book resource edited by Rachel Kanigel that can be ordered either directly from the website or through Amazon.
Why to Find It
For the teacher that wants to create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for all students, this is a must-use reference. Our words are the first place we should start when it comes to letting students--all students, including commonly marginalized students--know that they are valued and intelligent members of the classroom. However, this level of linguistic awareness is not always so easy to achieve simply because bias is ingrained in many English terms and phrases (think of good sportsmanship and the implicit gender bias it holds). Thankfully, that's where The Diversity Style Guide website (and book!) comes in; it offers lists of biased and offensive terms to avoid, suggestions for alternative phrasings, and even terminology guides for educators and others who wish to be more aware and bias-free in their language and writing.
