Charcoal is a sustainable, natural, and renewable environmental art medium. It is often derived from willow or vine twigs. It's both biodegradable and non-toxic, and acts as a versatile, eco-friendly alternative to other synthetic materials in your typical colored pencil.
For this project, I used scrap paper that was left at the cutting board in my classroom. I used a black charcoal pencil to draw the entire piece. charcoal is a fantastic example of a medium to use if you are thinking about creating art in a more sustainable way.
The photo on the left is showing materials I used to make the drawing, and the photo on the right is the cutting board I took scrap paper from.
Here was a rough fist draft sketch of the piece, which was also made with charcoal pencil.
I tested out the charcoal pencils with this sketch, and I was a little worried about how it would come out. But it ended up being the perfect medium for what I was envisioning.Â
I also used white charcoal in this sketch, but I didn't like how it turned out, so in the final piece I used only black.
