Upcycling means a lot to me. Transforming used or pre-loved items is something that resurfaces memories, elevates emotions and metaphorically sculpts the future. In this case, the outfit I have created embodies love and excitement. Each fabric carries its own story; whatever story that may be.
At many points in this unit I felt the need to stretch myself and create something of higher significance. The fashion and textiles industry was something I had never taken interest in, until recently- where I came to the realisation that now; more than ever, we need to upcycle as well as recycle.
Patchwork, denim, colour block and fur are notable patterns I am heavily inspired by, hence being incorporated into my designs. Each technique compliments the others; forming a cohesively-structured concept that attracts the audience visually. Both colour palettes connote different ideologies, but together signify how upcycling will forever be tied to nature's survival.
To develop a thorough understanding of what upcycling truly is, I explored some of the endless possibilities it has to offer, and the impact this act has on our planet's water, earth and air. One form of pollution that gave people a reason to start upcycling, is land pollution- more particularly landfill.
MONSTER ENERGY CAN SCULPTURES
From trash to treasure, these cans portray emerging acts of upcycling that are reaching all corners of the world. Made with papier clay, acrylic paint, varnish and spare eyelashes, they brighten the room with their unique, striking features and bold colour palette.
