Most websites are designed to be seen by the public. However, there are several reasons why you might want to make your site private or limit your audience:
It is for a school assignment.
It is an online resume or portfolio that you don't want someone to copy or plagiarize.
The site contains personal/private information about you or others.
It's important to note that you can change the privacy settings for your website at any time.
1. To publish your site and make it viewable click on Publish in the top right hand corner.
2. You will be prompted to give your site a web address (this is the URL that will appear in the address bar of your browser). There is a chance that your first choice for a web address might already have been used. If so, try a variation.
3. Once you have found an available web address, you can choose who can see your website by clicking on Manage. (By default the published site will be public.)
Check the box to request that public search engines do not display your site if you do not want it to appear in searches.
4. If you want to restrict the website to be only viewed by specific people, click on the Published site option in the General Access section and choose the Remove link option.
5. The site is will no longer be public and is now restricted to the people you share the site with.
6. If you want to give someone viewing privileges for your site, your professor for example, add their email address.
7. Make them a Published Viewer. You can write them a message to let them know you are granting access to the site to them.
8. If you want to add someone as an editor, a group member for example, simply add their email address and select the Editor option for them.
9. To make your website live, click on Publish in the lower right-hand corner.
10. From now on, any time you make a change to your website you will have to click on Publish again. Google Sites will show you a preview of the changes (for example if you deleted a page) before you make your changes go live.
11. To share a link with someone, go to the particualr page you'd like to share (e.g. the home page), and click on the link icon in the top toolbar.
12. Click on "Copy Link" and paste it in an email, a document, or anywhere you'd like to share the link.
To paste the link, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + V (Windows), Cmd+V (Mac) or right-clink and choose Paste.
