Möllevångstorget Proposals:
Since the whole square is exposed to sun in summer a shading structure is needed. Especially, in the market and main pedestrian flow area shadow is essential to ensure people's comfort. Hence, we suggest a temporary pavilion similar to the example of Bar al Bahrain Pavilion. Ideally, its canopy can be even adjusted to the daily weather conditions.
Water interventions have the highest cooling effect when nearby to people. Overlaying the main pedestrian flow with the warmest areas, we identified an area suitable for a spray park on days over 25 °C. An additional cooling effect by wetting the ground can be achieved by implementing an evaporative pavement.
In the North of the square vegetation in form of permanent trees or pop-up green facing South could ensure microclimate comfort and create hang out areas. Furthermore, we suggest to plant a row of trees on the south west side of the square facing the street. This would provide a shelterbelt for wind protection in colder months. The temporary wind shields between trees could be removed to allow more ventilation depending on the seasonal climate.
Gustav Adolfs Torget Proposals:
We recommend mist providers in the South of the square, where one of the warmest areas is located. We also thought about drinking water fountains near benches since people probably spend some time there.
The main pedestrian flow is not covered with any shading structures at all. That is why we suggest a temporary shading sails installation. Gustav Adolfs Torgest is a central square also known for its light installations in winter. Therefore, also shading art installations based on a placemaking process seem suitable as long as they do not disturb sightlines or are obstacles for pedestrians. These large interventions would provide shadow in the hottest time of the day (12-4 pm).
In addition, we suggest portable trees on the east side to be flexible for events. Another form of proposed vegetation is a pergola in the seating area. In winter, it is not providing shade, but in summer it does.
