Basics

This page describes the basic information of plurality that is needed to understand other aspects of life for systems.

Plurality refers to the state of having multiple identities living within a single body. Oftentimes, these different identities call themselves alters or headmates. Headmates may have specific roles that help to keep daily life running as smoothly as possible, though this is not required. Headmates can vary in countless ways, such as age, gender, sexuality, personality, and appearance within headspace. All of these headmates live within a 'system', or a collective of headmates sharing a given body. Different headmates can control the body depending on the circumstances, leading to changes in demeanor, vocal patterns, and preferences among other things.

The plural experience exists on a wide spectrum, and every system is different, so communication is key both within a system and with others in one's life. This site scratches the surface of basic information for new and questioning systems and singlet allies looking to learn more. No two systems are exactly the same, so this information is based on general gatherings of information from various readings by other systems as well as communicating with plurals about their lives.
