Flexible Musician

Elementary Student Teaching Placement Grade: 4th and 5th

Observation Lesson

This lesson was taught for my fourth and fifth-grade class during my elementary placement at French Road Elementary School during the COVID-19 pandemic in Spring 2021. In this responding and connecting lesson, the students are listening to two different themes from the movie Star Wars, which was composed by John Williams. The students did a movement activity to the Imperial March to analyze a theme using movements. After the movement activity, we compared and contrast Yoda's theme and the Imperial March using a descriptive word bank to guide the students in further discussion.

EDTPA Lesson Plan

As a flexible musician, I aim to construct lesson plans that not only expand students learning but also expand my own. I have created a lesson plan to teach students the song "Rain, Rain, Go Away." Choosing repertoire that is appropriate, I find songs with highly culturally authentic and low bias through analysis through music sources, pedagogy, and contextual information. Through learning music from other cultures that are unfamiliar to me, I lead students to become culturally aware together in a supportive classroom environment. When students understand and make personal connections from music from an unfamiliar culture, they seek to make connections and further their learning through creating, performing, responding, and connecting. As an educator, I am teaching individuals of many different backgrounds and experiences, so it's important that I represent all the young minds in my classroom!
