Reasons for Vlans

• Vlans break up groups of hosts in any way you desire.
• Increase security by hiding away VLans
• Prevents network performance degradation by limiting broadcasts and broadcast storms.

Broadcast storm- Caused by excess broadcast traffic on one broadcast domain. Generally gradual as more hosts respond and broadcast the CPU and switches will spike to %100 percent and will not be able to pass traffic.

Access port- Can belong to only one VLan and can not trunk.

Trunk Port- Allows multiple Vlans to span a between switches

Dynamic Port- Allows trunking to be negotiated by the switch
