In November of 2018 I participated in a sashiko and boro workshop by Shannon and Jason at Stitches SoCal. The patching and hand stitching techniques they shared came to mind in the spring semester when my high school students and I were planning our repurpose and redesign projects based on the Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) competition.Â
I started by finding used garments at Goodwill in a color palette I liked. I chose to use only natural fibers. To save time, I used a commercial pattern and cut the pieces from different garments. I added boro patches and sashiko stitching from there, and can continue to customize the jacket by adding more.
