Initial concept development, and model exploration

Iinitial concept sketches included the tessellated brick pattern, this interest in the fold was based on the idea that it would enable expansion of the form giving the impression of breathing

first attempts at the folding pattern

paper and mdf model

form development continued into a cylindrical shape which allowed us to develop a sketch model with greater functionality, the idea being that the pulling the string would cause the tessellated structure to open up and let out more light this string pull would also give the form further nods to a lighting fixture by hinting at the traditional chain pull lighting fixture.

after deciding how to move forward and solidifying decision in regards to the form , we could then develop our material choices , as we had been working with acrylic at the time we elected to utilize laser cutting to produce a frame for which we could mount our origami shade to. having access to the laser cutter was a great aid in terms of time spent fabricating and this allowed us to iterate the internal structure, and give the on off functionality more consistency

final concept model utilizing polymer sheet material and acrylic internal frame, the oak outer frame was made in the Humber college wood shop out of material left over from a previous project the string is meant to be a pull chord but suffered excessive friction when turning the lamp on and off.
