Runfold South
The main landfill owned by Suez is situated south of Guildford Road, the old A31. Sand extraction began in Runfold in 1944 and the site has been operated as a landfill since 1967. It comprises 4 main areas or "Cells":
Area A - This area has now been largely restored, the target date for completion was originally December 2018, but a number of issues still remain to be signed off by Surrey County Council (SCC) as having been completed to their satisfaction, so it is yet to be placed into the 5 year after care period.
Area B - (Including Old Hogs Back). this is the area that was historically overfilled but the community previously confirmed that we would not wish to see this area opened up (no-one knows what is in there!) but that we did want the overfilling to be recognised and incorporated into the overall master plan for the site as a whole. This has now been done and the new plan includes the installation of a footpath route which will allow the community to regain the view lost from the North Downs Way over Farnham and the surrounding area. Suez plan to complete work with a view to fencing and grazing in 2020. Area C - This is the last area of sand extraction but filling has slowed, with Suez blaming the economic climate. We await further news regarding the expected timing of the start to restoration. Central - (Also known as the ROMP area, it includes the old Tarmac site). SUEZ has undertaken further investigation work in this area of the site to support filling over the unlined historic landfill that lies beneath. Suez have advised that they are still on target to complete restoration by the end of 2021 although this is very dependent on their submissions to the EA, their approval and then the subsequent filling to the approved plan.
Runfold North
Runfold North
Situated north of Guildford Road, this is an old landfill site, which Suez has currently in aftercare. The earlier weed infestations have been treated and brought under control. This area is being successfully grazed with animals and the farmer is said to be keen to expand the grazed areas to other areas of the Runfold site, which is great news as this will help to ensure both North and South sites are properly looked after going forward.
A Master Plan for the restoration of the whole site is still in development but the requirement to restore the site ready for after care and for Suez to cease operations by 31st December 2021 is currently in doubt. The Community Liaison Group, comprising representatives of the local community together with environmental experts meets regularly with Suez and SCC to monitor progress and agree actions to achieve the agreed closure date.
