Glen shelters in the Maple Hollow unit
The inside of a glen shelter - staff sleep on cots with mattresses and can sleep under an optional bug net.
Your shared living space at camp includes 1 cot with a mattress and 1 nightstand/small shelf. You'll be sleeping in the same area as other staff, so you're expected to keep your area of the glen shelter neat and tidy.
We have "units" at camp, which are campsites that include 4-7 glen shelters, 4 latrines, a picnic shelter, and a fire circle. Scroll to the bottom of this page to see the camp map.
Latrines are like permanent port-a-potties, and staff and campers use them while at camp. Showers are not located in the units, but are near the pool. There are washstands in each unit that connect to a water pump, and all water that comes out of these pumps at camp is potable (drinkable) water.
Glen shelters are rustic wooden structures that have four walls, a roof, screened windows with canvas curtains inside, and a screened door. Most Glen shelters do NOT have electricity, None have running water or flushing toilets. No food is permitted in glen shelters as it attracts wildlife like mice and snakes.
Campers sleep in glen shelters nearby, but staff and campers do not live in the same glen shelter.
Nope!
Staff and campers use the pit latrines, affectionately known as BIFFYs (Bathrooms In the Forest For You). These toilets do not flush.
There are showers in the pool house for camper and staff use (staff do not shower while campers are showering). There are also several showers located throughout camp that are designated for staff use.

The dining hall
Camp Potomac Woods provides a staff house for use by staff on their scheduled time off. The staff house is equipped with electricity, running water, a kitchen (stove, fridge, sink), and furniture. Staff are responsible for keeping the staff house neat and clean. Wi-Fi in the staff house can be slow and is limited to a specific number of devices at given time.
Shower houses: We have two shower houses at camp - one at the pool and another at Hill High. Campers will be scheduled to shower directly after swimming each day, and staff may use the shower house if campers are not scheduled to use it. Staff may also use the shower house in the basement of the dining hall if no JCs are scheduled to use it.
Parking lot: The camp parking lot is located just inside the entrance. Staff members must back their cars into a space in the camp parking lot with a tag hanging from their rearview mirror that shows it is a staff vehicle. On check-in and check-out days (Sundays and Fridays), staff should be sure their cars are parked in the back of the lot or other designated location to allow for parents to drop off and pick up their campers.
Singing Benches: We use the singing benches on Celebration Night each Thursday when each unit of campers can perform a song or dance for other units! Each unit has a designated number of benches where their campers can sit.
Ashgrove: A large fire circle that can accommodate the entire camp. Every Sunday and Thursday night we have a campfire inside Ashgrove to either welcome new campers (staff sing songs and introduce themselves) or bid them farewell (we all sing slow campfire songs together) before they leave on Friday.
Fields: There are 3 open fields at camp: one near the pool, one near Forest Glen (Sports Field), and one near the Dining Hall (Flaco Field). These fields are great for large group games, camping out, or stargazing!
Peace Creek & Trail: A lovely little stream that runs through camp. The Peace Creek Trail runs adjacent to the Peace Creek and is great for a mindfulness hike or observing nature. In some locations of the creek, campers and staff are allowed to go “creeking”, which involves walking through the creek and getting covered in mud.
Eco-Lab: A pavilion located near the Potomac River. It’s a great place to do nature activities like the RiverWalk patch program activities!
Ferncliff: A primitive (no bathrooms or water) unit used for tent camping or sleeping under the stars. Campers and staff are welcome to reserve the unit for a fun night under the stars!
Greenbrier Hammocks: A primitive (no bathrooms or water) unit with posts for hanging hammocks. Campers and staff are welcome to reserve the hammocks for a fun night under the stars!
Fishing Dock: Located near the Fishing Shack, the fishing dock was built in 2013 and is a great place to enjoy a packout lunch or try out fishing!
Units: Hill High, Freddie Mac, Knoll, Ridge, Forest Glen, Maple Hollow, Lost Corner, Bluff, and Tulip Poplar are the units where campers and most staff will live.
Pool: The pool is where campers go to swim each day. There are showers and a laundry room with 3 washers and 3 dryers where staff can do their laundry.
Pooh Tree: A naturally hollow living sycamore tree on the banks of the Potomac River. Most units will hike to the Pooh Tree during their time at camp – you can hop inside the trunk for a photo!
Priscilla’s Trail: This trail starts in the parking lot and goes all the way to the Pooh Tree.
Kresge Dining Hall: This is where we eat all our meals.
Emergency Shelter: The basement of the Kresge Dining Hall. We’ll use the emergency shelter in case of severe weather. It also has storage, living quarters for some kitchen and support staff, and a washer/dryer.
