Now that I am in college, will I have time to be in choir?
This is a common question, especially for students that have recently graduated from high school or community college. In high school, choirs meet 5 days a week for about an hour, have 1-2 concerts per semester, with occasional choral festivals. Being in choir at Cal Poly Pomona is not like choir in high school or community college. You will only have rehearsals during the class period. The only exceptions are scheduled dress rehearsals, choir retreats, or festival dates which are made known at the beginning of the semester in the course syllabus.
How much time is required for the class enrollment?
The Cal Poly Pomona Choirs only rehearse during times as indicated unless otherwise noted in the syllabus such as Dress Rehearsals, Retreats, Festivals, etc.
MU 3640L - Chamber Singers (T/Th 1-2:50pm)
MU 3610L - Concert Choir (M/W 1-2:15pm)
MU 3650A - African American Vocal Ensemble (W 4-5:50pm)
What kind of academic credit is offered for being in the choirs?
Each choir is worth 1 academic credit. It is important that you keep your class schedule open during the times that the choir you are interested in meets.
In addition to being a part of the choirs at CPP, students may enroll in Priority Registration. Many majors at Cal Poly Pomona are impacted which makes it difficult to enroll for classes as they fill up quickly. Having priority registration gives you access to enroll in classes weeks before the regular academic registration period.
Can I be in more than one ensemble?
Yes, of course you can! In fact, a lot of students in the program are in more than one choir (sometimes all three). Feel free to check out the CPP Music Department's Ensemble Page for other ensembles you may be interested in in addition to choir: http://www.cpp.edu/~class/music/ensembles/index.shtml
Does it cost anything to be a part of the choirs?
There are no fees associated with being enrolled in Chamber Singers, Concert Choir, nor The African American Vocal Ensemble. Obviously, you will have to purchase your own Concert Black Attire for concerts. There are no required music fee as music is provided to you by the department.
Will I get to travel or do any off-campus performances or tours?
Yes! The Kellogg Chamber Singers alternates between major tours and local recruitment tours every year. The Kellogg Chamber Singers have toured throughout the Northern, Central, and Southern Regions of California. All choirs will perform in local festivals throughout Southern California. Costs are usually covered through ASI funds, leaving only food expenses to each member.
What if I'm not sure and need time to see if being in choir at Cal Poly Pomona is right for me?
It is highly encouraged to join any of the choirs at Cal Poly Pomona as a new student because it can provide you with an instant network of friends and colleagues that can assist and support you as you start this new chapter of your life.
It is very common for new students to be apprehensive about making a commiment to any of the choirs. However, you should put your mind at ease - there are plenty of opportunities for you to try an ensemble that works for you.
