Are disruptive climate protests effective at raising awareness and building publicsupport? As activists increasingly turn to tactics like road blockades and food throw-ing, the political consequences of such actions remain contested. We investigate howprotest disruption, police response, and personal costs affect public attitudes using apre-registered factorial survey experiment with over 11,000 respondents in Germany. We find that both disruptive protest tactics and violent police presence reduce cli-mate awareness and support for protests, while personal costs to bystanders have noeffect. Importantly, violent police responses reduce support even when protestersare non-disruptive, especially among respondents who trust the police. Linking oursurvey to geo-coded protest data, we also show that prior local exposure to climateprotests decreases support for disruptive actions. These findings highlight the im-portance of how climate activism is staged, and suggest that police behavior playsa critical, yet often overlooked, role in shaping public support.
