How do we expect young people to dream if they don’t know what they can dream about? Opportunities for career exploration give young people broader exposure to the working world they will one day enter. It helps them “connect the dots” between school and career in ways that keep them motivated to graduate with the skills they will need for the future.

A growth mindset is best understood when contrasted with a fixed mindset. People with a fixed mindset believe everyone’s abilities are unchanging — they view a person’s talents and skills as things that are essentially predetermined at birth and set in stone. Alternatively, people with a growth mindset believe that skills and qualities are things that can be cultivated through effort and perseverance.
A growth mindset empowers people to believe they can develop their abilities — brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that are essential for accomplishment in just about any sphere.

"Friends are vital to school-age children’s healthy development. Research has found that children who lack friends can suffer from emotional and mental difficulties later in life. Friendships provide children with more than just fun playmates. Friendships help children develop emotionally and morally. In interacting with friends, children learn many social skills, such as how to communicate, cooperate, and solve problems. They practice controlling their emotions and responding to the emotions of others. They develop the ability to think through and negotiate different situations that arise in their relationships. Having friends even affects children’s school performance. Children tend to have better attitudes about school and learning when they have friends there. In short, children benefit greatly from having friends."

Solving problems means making choices. Typically, effective problem-solving skills result in “happier, more confident, and more independent” individuals. When children tackle problems on their own, or in a group, they become resilient. They learn to look at challenges from a fresh perspective. Therefore, they take more calculated risks. Problem solving is important in child development because confident, capable children usually grow into confident, capable adults.
If students practice problem solving consistently, they can develop greater situational and social awareness. Additionally, they learn to manage time and develop patience.

Being a good self-advocate has big benefits for kids and adults who learn and think differently. People who know how to self-advocate are more likely to do well in school, work, and life. They often feel confident in what they’re learning and doing.
Self-advocacy also creates independence. And it empowers people to find solutions to problems that others might not be aware of.
Self-advocacy has three key elements:
Understanding your needs
Knowing what kind of support might help
Communicating these needs to others

Kids experience a vast array of feelings, just as adults do. They can feel bored, anxious, sad, disappointed, embarrassed, and scared—to name a few. While most of us experience any number of emotions from day to day, we are not necessarily taught how to deal with them or how to cope. Kids need to learn skills to manage their emotions in a healthy way. It’s important to teach them coping skills that can help them face their fears, calm themselves down, and cheer themselves up.
Why self-esteem is important for kids?
Self-esteem — a person's sense of worth — is important for success. When children feel confident and secure, they're more likely to succeed in school and achieve personal goals. As they get older, they learn to confront problems and resist peer pressure.
Students will be reviewing the annual Think First, Stay Safe (TFSS) curriculum. Think First & Stay Safe™ safety and prevention lessons will be implemented for all Fulton County Schools K-5 students. The TFSS is evidence based curriculum that's mission is to help prevent crimes against children and youth through education and awareness.

This month our students will be learning about goals!
What is a goal?
Saying a personal goal.
Identifying strengths and areas of growth.
Practicing working towards a goal.
Setting goals is important for kids because it establishes a sense of purpose for their actions. Realistic, meaningful goals have plenty of other benefits too. They help with decision making, improve self-confidence and independence, and teach perseverance alongside countless other positive impacts.
