As a school counselor, I offer individual counseling, group counseling, and classroom guidance lessons to students. I collaborate with students, teachers, parents, administrators, and community agencies in order to best help my clients. I assist parents and teachers regarding academic, social, personal, and career needs of students.
The purpose of the school counseling program is to promote student achievement, as well as academic and personal success. This includes, but is not limited to, academic success, personal/social development, and emotional well-being in order to enhance learning and prosperity. School counseling is a voluntary process and comes with no guarantee.
The Four Components of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program
Guidance Curriculum: the purpose is to assist students in developing skills they need to enhance their personal, social, education, and career development.
Individual Planning: the purpose is to guide all students as they plan, monitor, and manage their own educational, career, and personal-social development.
Responsive Services: the purpose is to intervene on behalf of those students who have immediate personal needs.
System Support: the purpose is to demonstrate the counselor's support of the total school program.
I accept referrals from students, teachers, parents, and administrators for counseling services. Sessions are brief, usually lasting 30 minutes or less to limit time out of class. Students in need of long-term counseling will be referred to outside agencies.
Group counseling is composed of 20-30 minute sessions typically for four to six weeks with six to eight students per group. There will be a referral sheet available to teachers, staff, and parents who feel that a student or their child could benefit from small group counseling services. I will send out information on the different types of groups throughout the school year as needs arise.
Classroom guidance lessons are 15-20 minutes in length and are scheduled throughout each week. Lessons are age appropriate and cover a variety of topics such as kindness, manners, mindfulness, being successful at school, etc.
The foundation of my counseling theoretical orientation is in person-centered counseling. I believe clients have the strengths to solve their problems, and the relationship between client and counselor provides a safe place for the client to work through their problems. I also subscribe to reality therapy because of its solution-focused nature. I help students evaluate their behavior and make actions or choices that best satisfy their wants and needs.

When one of our little Cardinals is struggling with issues that are affecting their success at school or home, they can be referred to me for individual counseling services. I will work with them to assess and identify their presenting problem and design a plan of treatment that will help them get back to their fully functioning self. These individual sessions are usually brief but based around the needs of the students. My counseling philosophy is based on the humanistic approach to counseling and the teachings of Carl Rogers. While individual counseling sessions are brief due being in a school setting, I will do my best to help them in all ways possible. However, if a problem is too big for us to handle at school, I will refer them to further, more in-depth services to another counselor outside of school.
