Postcards from Upstate NY

San Fransisco, CA - June 2019

Pier 39: a single floating dock of sea lions basking in the midday sun.

Regstrup, DenmarK - June 2019

Fields wheat for miles, rustling in the summer breeze.

Lake Elsinore, CA - March 2019

This year was a great year for California poppies. The Superbloom in Southern California was in rare form this year.

North Shore, HI - March 2019

Driving away from the touristy beaches of Honolulu allows you to enjoy some peaceful wave watching, even on Oahu.

Lapland Lake Resort Northville, NY - Jan. 2019

A great way to start off the new year with an all ASL writing retreat for junior scholars, at an adorable cabin with great friends.

Joshua Tree, CA - Dec. 2018

National Parks are such a great way to see the best of the west. The Palm Desert area of California that never disappoints.

Salton Sea, CA - Dec. 2018

A much needed trip to the desert in So. California to soak up the sun in the middle of a cold, grey, NY winter. Salton Sea has a very eerie vibe, but the waterfowl were plentiful.

Toronto, Ontario - May 2018

One of the best things about living in Rochester is it's proximity to Toronto. It's such a fun city to explore, especially when the sun is out and the sky is cloudless.

Niagara Falls, Ontario - May 2018

A quick trip across the border to get a glimpse from the Canadian side of the falls.

Lake Eaton Campground, NY - Oct. 2017

A bit early for peak colors, but gorgeous nonetheless.

North Elba, NY - Oct. 2017

Trickling streams and fall colors abound in the Adirondacks in early October.

Middle Falls Lechworth State Park, Castile, NY - Aug. 2017

Returning to Lechworth in the summer is a completely different experience than being there in the middle of winter. Hot and humid, green and lush, the view from the middle falls overlook is lovely. Such a transformation from season to season.

Cobb's Hill Park Rochester, NY - Aug. 2017

Well, here is the new view of Downtown Rochester, from the top of Cobb's Hill Park. Looks so different from far away. Talk about perspective. Looks quiet from up here...

Downtown Rochester, NY - July 2017

Back to the states, still on European time, awake early enough to see the sun rise. Only a few weeks left in this downtown loft apartment. I will miss these beautiful views overlooking Lake Ontario and the rest of downtown. Sunrise is really magical in this apt.

Kalø Castle Ruins - Mols Bjerge National Park, Denmark June 2017

Another non upstate NY postcard, this time from the ruins of a Danish castle on the seaside, with Danish dairy cows grazing on the hillside.

Watkins Glen State Park, Watkins Glen, NY - May 2017

I can not say enough good things about this state park. Walking through this park in the spring makes one believe that fairies might exist, because surely this glen is where fairies would live. An idyllic scene, with cascading waterfalls, thick, green, tangled vegetation, and exposed rock face. I wish I could live here.

Niagra Falls, Niagra, NY - May 2017

A short drive up to Niagra was worth the trip. Overlooking Canada, the falls were beautiful, albeit touristy. The water was surprisingly clear, and the constant mist was refreshing.

Rail Yards Market Albuquerque, NM - May 2017

OK, clearly not upstate NY, but I couldn't resist posting a picture of the rail yards. I made a trip back to NM for some heat and some sunshine. While I was there I made a pit stop at the Rail Yards Market. This beautiful old abandoned rail yard building in the was just glowing with NM sunshine.

Taughannock Falls Trumansburg , NY - April 2017

Beautiful visit to Ithaca with a short side trip to visit Taughannock Falls State Park. As was promised, the area is full of beautiful gorges and lots and lots of water, including this pretty spectacular one.

High Falls Rochester, NY - April 2017

Walking distance from my downtown Rochester apartment, along the Genesee Riverway Trail , you can stumble across this impressive waterfall. While it used to be important for the flour and beer industry in the olden days, it is now mainly used to generate hydroelectric power.

The birthplace of the resistance. Seneca Falls, NY - April 2017

On the way to the Finger Lakes, happened upon the Women's Rights National Historical Park and the site of the first Women's Rights Convention held at Wesleyan Chapel, July 19 & 20, 1848. Among the interesting artifacts and historical memorabilia at the museum is The Declaration of Sentiments, based on The Declaration of Independence, which outlined the fact that women and men should have equal rights under US Law, and sovereignty over their minds, bodies, and property.

Susan B. Anthony's Grave, Mount Hope Cemetery, Rochester, NY - Feb. 2017

Right in the heart of Rochester, buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, is Ms. Susan B. Anthony. Felt I had to visit her here, to get some inspiration in the wake of the election. Feeling the power of women's rights on this sunny but cold Rochester day.

Lechworth State Park, Castile, NY - Feb. 2017

Known as "The Grand Canyon of the East", Lechworth State Park is home to one of the many amazing gorges of Upstate, NY. The Genesee River roars through the gorge, down three amazing sets of falls, and a number of cascades. More spectacular than the falls, during this spring-like February weather, was the wall of icicles, some more than 10 feet tall. The entire gorge wall was covered with musical melting icicles, dripping and crackling in the spring air.
