Truth: “There are only approximately 30 genetically modified foods, and not all 30 are consumed by human beings on a daily basis.” (Capritto)
There are only 14 main crops that are consumed by humans consistently that are genetically modified
Truth:
“Genetically modified foods actually help the environment as they allow farmers to grow more crops using less land and less pesticides.” (Capritto)
According to a study conducted by the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications, the usage of GMOs have actually decreased the environmental footprint associated with pesticides by approximately 18.4%.
Genetically modified technology has led to a 37% decrease in chemical pesticides.
In China, there was an almost 100,000 ton decrease in the use of pesticides as a result of the rise of GMOs
Truth:
“GMOs have been extensively researched and there is no evidence to prove that GMOs are not good for humans. GMOs have undergone more research and testing than any other good produced by humans.” (Capritto)
The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine found that there was no risk to consuming genetically modified goods from the market. They stated that “no substantiated evidence of a difference in risks to human health between current commercially available genetically engineered (GE) crops and conventionally bred crops,”
Truth:
“By utilizing GMOs, this has resulted in farmers utilizing less insecticide and herbicide spray.” (Capritto)
Therefore, by utilzing less insecticide and herbicide sprays, it is a complete fallacy that they are full of toxins. There is evidence to show that this myth is complete false
“There is no evidence to support GMOs causing health problems such as allergies, autism, celiac disease, etc. There is a possibility of GMOs causing certain proteins to mutate, resulting in allergies, however, all GMOs are evaluated extensively before being produced to the general public, thus, the GMOs out in the market are not likely to cause any health problems.” (Capritto)
Research in Seoul, Korea, had found that there were no health side effects from consuming GMOs. In this study, scientists fed rats foods that were genetically modified and not genetically modified. These rats were fed non-genetically modified tomatoes, genetically modified tomatoes, genetically modified peppers, and non-genetically modified peppers. After analyzing the rats and the foods that they were eating, the research concluded that there was no damage done to any of the rats with regards to body parts, thus, it proves that GMOs do not cause health issues.
