The photos to the left demonstrate a safe, accessible, and comfortable design for learning and development. Small, rounded tables were utilized in my 3rd Grade Learning Support Placement for small group instruction, allowing for each student to feel supported. Dim lighting was also incorporated in the classroom, which helped to make students feel more relaxed and comfortable during instructional time. This 3rd Grade Learning Support classroom is a great demonstration of a space where all members of the community feel safe, belong, and can learn.
In order to support positive student behavior during both of my student teaching placements, I actively play a role in the school wide positive behavior support system (PBIS). At Central Elementary School, each student is given a punch card, and once they’ve earned ten punches, they have the opportunity to be called down to the office to collect a small prize. By giving students punches in their punch cards, I am helping to reinforce positive behavior and keep students on track with their learning. I have noticed that using the PBIS punch card system helps students stay focused, make good choices, and feel proud of their positive behavior! Additionally, I continuously model habits that promote learning, ethical behavior, and citizenship so that students are able to see what these important elements look like throughout the school day.
