Attended the Society of Wetland Scientists International Meeting at Prague, Czech Republic. So fresh, probably just left my hotel room for a meal. I stayed at Clarion Congress Hotel Prague and this was also where our conference was held. I received my Award here. Thank you very much again. I was wearing a shirt that I bought at this city (printed in the shirt) which was one of our venues in the past. It was a surprise to see my colleague and was able to shoot this picture of mine. Thanks once more.

Aplonis panayensis* has been seen in the urban area... and sometimes in home trees they make sounds-- "parang sinasakal", that one would be surprised what animal was it. And luckily, I was able to see this bird atop the Moringa. It has a variety of sounds here (in this video) but what I heard seems like this. Known to mimic sounds and can form murmurations. But for our local species, I am not sure about these. Seems a murmuration for A p ? * (Just appeared online). Not a "devil bird" for me.

Comments- For a day or so I viewed videos, read short paragraphs and statements about the Pithecophaga j. and it's quite not so good to learn that from 900 there are only 400 species or pairs? left... And I encountered a 2020 paper about this in the Cornell Ornithology Lab.. I think it's not available for public view even its DOI abstract is hidden and I haven't seen a Filipino co author?*.. So, there is no Pnoy scientist who has been studying this for long (as to my thinking). We have Phil. ants by a Pny with a Harvard Prof. as a co author. A lot of Phil. myxomycetes with Pnoy authors plus sometimes with US co- authorship. I think considering that we have so many concerns about birds in this country, that a PhD in Ornithology will have to be implemented.. If UPLB cannot do it then UPD will be fine, as it is a catchment of almost all knowledge. There was a time that in an Int'l wildlife conference, I was given the chance to attend it with financial support as long as I had a [striking] paper to present but there are so many things (call that as others) to handle at that point of time. So there are always ways.
*I presented this about the need for Phil authors as co authors in this "kind of study" in my talk at UNP sponsored by PAIR a long time ago.
**Nakakatawa, there are new stuff that I know from Pnoys who are "field biologists" of their own [e.g. non raptor pero ma tame bumabalik sa kanya at saka yung hand fed na wild bird (imprinting allows different facets of bird's life).. as I am much concerned about the "domesticity" aspect of wild birds (in our published paper)]. So kailangan pa ang PhD in Ornithology with all these "new knowledge" from the natural backyard that some of them ("native field bio" to this habitat) are just self learning from scratch (introduce them to Scopus and integrate them sa UPD) at ibigay nalang natin tong info sa AI- library of knowledge - e bakit ka pa marinig (or mabasa ng output) sa isang highly esteemed person with a higher degree kun my AI naman. I really donot know kun ano ba talaga ang accurate dito. Sa Fisheries, one can learn something from the fisherfolks but one can further substantiate it scientifically.. but sa aspect ng ibon.. can it be substantiated? ..e walang namang taong (mga o lahat ng) ibon ang spesyalista- di na cguro kasi pulit ulit nman makita mo sa video. Can there be a special algorithm for them as well as prospective fashion models with a scholarly make up. At least maka say UPD 'ling yan.

On Sophie's Choice (A movie)- I had this postponed (just talking about SC) because I watched the opening of Parangal directed to students and I was at that presentation where there was this song about "how to court/fall in love or sustain it? someone nga katulad mo?". It may apply to the main characters of Sophie's choice because how difficult was it to stay put as a couple with all their background flourishing and what's in their minds at that time. It is a narration of falsehoods by them. There was this recent occupant who tried to be friends with them, with a human, psychological or philosophical approach? ended whisked out in spite that he may be thinking he was better than the male partner. As this is a tragic one, I really could not imagine how living in NY could have been a breather for both at that time. But I think the past has been their irresistible memories that it seems so unstoppable and the influence of each is great. It stops at Emily Dickinson's untitled poem "Ample make this bed." This influence could be quite similar to one of my ob (which was written somewhere) about a mother who lived on the streets and raising her growing kid (from a baby) but only at that point. SC was inspired accordingly to the survivor or with an s because I searched and it seems there are others. The descendants (3rd or 4rth generations?) of them are talking about what happened to their most likely grandparents. Having to be with a diverse race of people/citizens, just like in LA, one could see the pleasantness of the human species with their "Americanized cultures". You can never admire this if you are not on the streets on common days. There was a friendly atmosphere for all. No repeats have to ever occur (applies to all).

I talked about movies of Meryl Streep because some of them are one of a kind. "Dark Matter"in the previous page and "SC" above then "The Hours", this time. A critic from a Univ. in England said that it (the novel where the movie was mostly/likely based, Mrs. Dalloway-I had a copy of this book (US bought) where are you??) connotes freedom from binary confinement* but let us analyze the 3 characters... were there some proofs which say so or most of it was seen in Clarissa (Rewind movie good for you). And this two video links can "show" how powerful it is. **C has S..but previously, C had R then R had L then L left R then C comes in to do the personal chores...Great acting for C . Instead of throwing parties (catchwords for the above), why don't you Throw seedlings around you and establish a garden (Retirees? have your own happy version)... it's the fourth? the Ultra Modern Time version (of the above?)... absolutely, for this, there is no way a tragic one, it will then be not in any way a theme for it (see title above). Distinctly, That's why my novel, Amidst Old Los Angeles, gives out an inspiring hope of joy, in the "centre of Old Los Angeles". Valentine's , Kalayaan (Dormitory), Sunken Garden {I just encountered this when I searched online for keywords: sunken garden, date}
Ohh.. So our freshies, which will be lodged or are now in there (in Kalayaan), am sure there is always a "time" for the heart for some. Everyone knows about GC (grade conscious[ness]) and is expected to be that with each one but having the heart find its "wee space" (as in this particular link) could be considered as a "splash of caring wind" and you don't have to "break" yourself like a "downfall of a Ferris wheel" once it ended. I really donot know the details (that's why I labeled it as wee), so just to "open you up" about this (I believe first time experience as friends only). But GC is still important otherwise you may not be able to graduate (at UPD). Here are the keywords for the Web Search: "A Valentine's Date to Remember" Sunken Garden Kalayaan UP Diliman.
While reading, perk yourself up with this song (Kalayaan Dorm mentioned?) from Eraserheads (UPD alumni singers)- Minsan. You may also search for tunes from DZUP. This song [from a DZUP list ] is "realistic" (Love is a Joke?). Here is link.

Out of the blue, I just searched about the treatment’s name and screenplay adaptation of my novel- “Yelwa- Yauri” and to my surprise it shows an answer. Yes- It is Beautiful Tears. Please see below. “So.. get out of your comfort zone.” “Yes, but one novel is still impending- Amidst Old Los Angeles.” Nevertheless, I had heard this music video with the title of Beautiful Tears but it is no way connected with my novel Yelwa-Yauri or its Treatment/Screenplay adaptation title of Beautiful Tears (Just coincidental) but I just like to listen to it… In fact, It quite provokes the “imaginary flow” of the first scene in Rome (Italy) [Rome has 2 scenes].

A Fish Technology? Pioneering? I labeled it as "PudPud". This comes to my mind when I was an English tutor of Sarahb.. Cha... (now back to Thailand as a Ph.D. graduate), an International student of UPD. At mostly ten am, she would come to my research rm as (I being) a RAsst in one of the institutes and would bring me "brunch".. not really just an extra breakfast with a Thai omellete (always) and others but I could not remember anymore. Mostly we ate together and she had miniature and tightly closed plastic containers with appetizers, mostly peppery hot which she sprinkled a little of it to her cooked rice, etc. And it comes as a reflection that if the fried cartilaginous skull parts of a fried fish head like Bisugo will be pulverized and used as an appetizer or a meal stimulant? Kasi-- kun all of the fleshy body parts of the fried fish naubos na and still you have one spoonful of rice left and you need to eat it at walang ulam na. Minsan yung fried soft part of the skull (found in the peripheral part) could be eaten with it and its taste make the bland cooked rice quite "delicious". As this is a head part, I was thinking about prions but there were no nerves with it or even the brain so I think it is still safe. Most of it may add to the floppiness of ones (human) ear lobes, probably. The fish skull is mostly bony? so only small portions may be utilized. Processing it (for commercial?) and the nutrients available [from it] may not be too great. This is just a suggestion. Don't even try.
Night time, Long Walks, Exit alleys [or even Entrance]/roads
Late in the P.M., during my time, was quite fearful if one walked in an unlighted street at UP Diliman. In my experience, I walked on a road across the IC from the shopping center because I failed to take the bus so I had to ride the Katipunan dyip. There was this well dressed guy standing and was seriously examining my "face", probably there was an org misunderstanding or an outsider who'd had another purpose and later I was left alone to continue my walk. To reiterate, as what I previously emphasized in my other pages of being careful when one has to execute long walks, especially if one comes from essential academic stations such as libraries esp. during the night, classrooms for night classes, etc. because such awful situations may be encountered. I walked one time by myself from the academic oval to Philcoa, I was even cautious inspite that it was in broad daylight. Though my mind can no longer remember the exit of the Katipunan dyip (I think it's the road where the Narra Residence Hall was), it may be prone to "unwelcome strangers" as well as its road entry (in front of the Asian Center). So too with the route going to Commonwealth? (way out at the gym's side ??). I had that experience of crossing that huge street from the gym going to the Radioactive station as well as AIT, and it was really frightening ("gushing" traffic). I was thinking why is AIT outside of the Diliman campus... there are a lot of spaces within Dil then why not transfer it there? I think I went to AIT in a hope to find my friend when we were writing letters once and later to find out she graduated. During our time letter writing and the post office were so essential even writing letters with a nice friend having her "turtle trademarks". Saka huwag na mag sabi sa sarili- the statement na "Anong paki ko! built in sa Isko/iska?) especially when these dangerous situations are eating you out. Be ready and prepare to run where the CCTVs are located and weaponize yourself... try to armor yourself with something legal. [hoping there is a tag solution of some sort that once it caught someone's skin it penetrates and would work like a gps- AI in miniaturely liquid form hahah. {Pop out message I received when writing that "I had my composition checked by AI". Grammarly one of them?}]. But I think do you need to spare those dating? unless kun kinuha nya sa yo but rami namn dyan.. Well in my experience, I was so tired after a thesis work and while walking [afternoon twilight] towards the Melchor hall, a couple crossed my sidewalk path and went to a mini forest lagoon? ito ba or apparition lang yun.. huwag mo to cguro pakialaman.. if alone forever ka then just accept it. Security guards must be apt and services like mini bus or coasters e service sa mga students who are doing their studies at lib during the deep nights or classes held at night... o nag te tesis usingthe stars/moons as focal points. Seems ok d ba? Siempre mas advantage yung na ka kotse (Umm not really)... Wise thinking is important.

Reflecting Back- Been there and how I summed it up:
"Just like in Plaquemines Parish Wetlands (Plaquemines Parish: Economy, 2011) the people living here may no longer go to the wet markets because their bayous [or slow moving stream or river] can render them so much food like shrimps, garfishes, crawfish (crayfish), shellfish, etc. for extended periods and of course, they can sell these to the neighboring places and much more if not for the destructive hurricanes, their bayous could have been a very nice ecotourism spot throughout the year. " Taken from my undelivered keynote speech titled "Saving the Wetlands: A Synthesis", supposedly that was during the first invite of a Chinese academician. Keywords: UN participation, University visits [Please explore past pages].
As my concern was about our mangroves, I was thinking how could this compare to its natural sustainability? One factor that I saw was that these parishes (where the bayous are) were spick and span. How about the mangroves? And the highways going into them were concretely furnished like royalty roads. It has less residences and a lot of natural airy space. The only problem is the hurricanes but I think as a result of our conference last time more levees were appropriately constructed {Thanks to all concerned} (see former page). Well, magrove trees incubate themselves into shallower brackish water types while there are riparian trees sometimes bordering some smaller bayous. I think these bayous are tributaries of the Mississippi river which one can eventually see (in the back of our venue) in French Quarter (New Orleans, Louisiana). I think when it comes to hurricane safeguarding our mangroves can easily work its way in. But I hope that what I wrote about it (in page 6), it will be as sustainable as that of the bayous. And regarding safety, bayous may have the presence of american alligators and crocodiles. So a bit of Africa in here but I haven't seen one in spite that we were pointed to its bubbling head while we're taken for a ride in an airboat and the fried gar fishes (see former page about its existence) in the restaurant that I ate with cooked rice was so delicious. Missed the Mekong River conference, could had been a good way of making comparisons. So- I may be wrong comparing bayous (river, rivulet, streams) and its riparian trees to the brackishwater of our mangroves and mangroves itself. But to naturally transform our mangroves more like it (esp. in terms of sustainability) could be a swell. One thing to remember I met a scientist there from Morocco who knew L. and L. knew her when we met a very long time. Now L heads. Wow!
Congratulations to all first placers and the rest of the topnotchers (2nd to 10th placers) in professional board exams of the University of the Philippines graduates! I think there are a lot of first placers! Hope the succeeding examinees to do the same or even double the number regardless of what professional degrees!
**(Memories 101)* I stayed one weekend in a lofty wooden big house of a UPLB Professor on long stilts with a long stair when we did research at the IRRI lib..
**From Page 1
What instigated me to throw congratulatory remarks to the topnotchers above (see post) was the 2023 result of the Vet Med Board Exams where UPLB took the highest and most of the top ten. Then came back that memories (see memories 101 above). I find out how kind and friendly besides being scholarly is this Vet Prof. Thanks to both M's (one M, a UPD researcher has been in the US) in this academic and peacefully relaxing and lofty experience.
Memoir- While in an airboat transversing the bayou, I suddenly exclaimed, "that looks like a mangrove" while viewing the trees at the edges. I read that the coastal area of Louisiana has a type of mangrove known as a black mangrove (can be tree like, about 20 ft tall or mostly? shorter) and as one Prof. said that they were located in the edge of the bayou. What I saw was more than a meter tall (a tree type) and away from the coast. Probably, it could not be. But there are several factors that need to be considered for continuous proliferation of the plant. One of that is temperature. It seems that it could not bear freezing or sub freezing temperatures (??). As you see, climate nowadays, could change temperatures in whatever neighboring areas. I read about this experimentally- considered to be a cold tolerant one. But as expected, hoping that it could also grow a profusion of roots that could safeguard the environment (e.g soil, etc. ) against hurricanes. Here is a very useful article* that one can heartily learn about Mangroves. One of the Presidents of the Society of Wetland Scientists during my time is from the Smithsonian Institution.
*There was a mention of R.L. in this article. In the first page, I do have a photo under the post titled: Prague, Czech** and if one scrolled a little bit below (Post title: No Mangrove Paper), he was the one who took my photo-- probably, we came out of the board meeting together.. and it was miserable of his demise. He was a mangrove expert and even recommended me for that known training in India where I hesitated to continue.

On Dating a UP student
In my former Valentine's post, I felt a "run down" when it comes to the outcome of dates. You can see that in movies or hear it from the mouths of the concerned or the other persons. Among those who gave out their reasons why one has to date a UP student, I think this reply is stronger: If the love date [problem] is like the Hell Week at Diliman, which she surpassed, then why not do the same with all the Hell that love is all about [Where's heaven?]. This made me recall a movie that was mentioned in my FamousFix (FF), It's Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona... and Penelope Cruz won the Academy award (BSA) as Maria Elena (not to compare with anyone) has that "paste that sticks in spite of..."... and as titled in my FF as "The Missing Ingredient"... I think she's contributory. This movie can be watched for free online. And the two articles (the other talks about pros and cons) concerning dating the UP students have these keywords that you can search online: Why should you date a UP student.
*Be Safe while Dating from all the disease causing organisms, viruses, bacteria, fungi, prions ("non living"), etc. as well as your profiles- guard it well.

Memoir- I can't forget when I called the front desk of Hilton Madison (in Wisconsin) if the tornado was in the vicinity for I saw it in the 24 hour weather TV in my room (I really do not know why that was my choice or I think because it's free). And she responded that it's far. As you see, one could view it in a screen, a map with all those hurricane/tornado wobbling spots and I thought our place was near it but it was not. Now, we have intermittent heavy rain even though we are far from the "eye of the storm". How cool or overly cool/wet for everyone. And for those who are teary when it's rainy, Why not do a little Science, etc. at Dil? (to deviate)> (Biology/Physics) - How do the cutin components of leaves influence the gravitational speed (of falling to the ground) of rain that drops in them? And how the angles of leaves change with the rain drops- weight and influence the speed of falling? And how soaked the leaves are, per cutin and/or other factors? >(Lit,Film,CA) -Write metaphorically shivering about the heavy rains that appear and re appear and how would it be if the leaves are humans [(where more emotions could be seen and applied rather than any other animals except probably for the monkey (emotional expression quite human like) but it's difficult to see it in a dog.] and the "reappearing and appearing" is your loved one and the rains are your tears. Or probably you may change the topic to something vigorous like "over a hot cup of tea" that the "rains" be defeated and "spritely hail you once again". > (Educ) Write a story for the toddlers about the caterpillar that hides underneath the leaf while the rain pounds pounds pounds the upper lamina. > (Retirees) Imagine yourself as an elementary student once in a simple wooden or concrete class room but oh! don't ever do that in real action.. students as well as teachers may find you a bit of awkward and wayward. Instead, for every drop of rain that falls fill it with memories that will make you smile while watching it in your window. >(Tech, Agri, Env) Can banana leaves take the place of these umbrellas while walking long paths to classes? Just like weather observing and making comparisons- when I was in my basement room in the International Center in Berlin, I heard the first thunderstorm of the place (knowing that this is very tropical). Why not shower a bit under the Dil rain but before try to find out how much "acid or base" is in it. Rain drops in different campuses may be different. Or you may have a companion that you could memorize or just familiarize or forget all together .>(H.E.,Food) Concoct something nice to eat. To put away those tears. I'm thinking what will that be? Probably food with valentine designs or with other food decors/bells. I hope this will be liked [Being used to Grab food ordering, then what would that new taste be. Difficult pleaser ??] There you are, there are lot of things to do (just my wild suggestions, you may not do it) rather than flip to the sad side.

Accordingly, HIV AIDS seems to show a trend that it is under control. So as to the nature of HIV's infection mechanism, then drugs as "maintenance" (Thanks for the Manufacturers) may exert efforts here besides public health. Through public health education, people are learning about these and that they may fully abstain from activities that could promote or make one becomes a victim. I think in one of my pages I mentioned about a Public Health Trainee license offered by the Dept. of Health in California. Public Health Education a must subject in elementary and high school? Felis domesticus? at UP Diliman. In the past, a "cat" was homely and could sleep (with you but) in a mattress edge by inching itself to a tucked portion of a hanging cotton- mosquito net thus sleeping in its fold while pulling a bit of its strings. It's warmth exudes, and it's snore is as comfortable as a piece of music in a radio. When homes were screened, cats may no longer have this access. And it seems that cats nowadays are wild. There was a kitten that was raised (outside of the screened house) until adult and even got pregnant. Whenever held and pampered, It had the tendency of pushing its paws in ones shirt while sucking (the shirt). It seems that this cat did not undergo the stages of being with the mother until there was a need to separate. And when it became pregnant and bore two, the kittens' eyes were treated with topical antibiotic and later commercial food were bought and made available to them. But later, they just disappeared. It was difficult to tame them as kittens. It's a wonder (Genes from Wild Cats? or Mom cat says so to be unfriendly?) but their presence around though not "homely" could guard against rodents, etc.
