Supervising a preservice teacher during their student teaching semester can feel like a new experience each time. Each preservice teacher will need different support and mentorship from their cooperating teacher and supervisor. The following article explores research-grounded strategies that cooperating teachers and supervisors can implement while mentoring a student teacher.
As a UND employee, you will be required to keep up with completing the online, module-based, Safe Colleges trainings. One of the steps in the onboarding process at UND will activitate your Safe Colleges account. Be sure the email account your Safe Colleges training is connected to is an account you check often, as this is how you will know that you have trainings to complete. Contact the UND Office of Safety if you wish to change the email address your account is under.
You can learn more about these trainings, find ideas on how to troubleshoot accessing your Safe Colleges account, and find the contact information for the UND Office of Safety at the link below.
See attached for a 16-Week timeline of when student teachers should be taking over general responsibilities in the classroom. We realize that every classroom has students with different needs that may or may not allow for student teachers to take over all teaching responsibilities in the classroom by the end of the semester. The taking over of some of these responsibilities will also depend on the ability and comfort level of the student teacher. The attached timeline is to provide you an idea of when responsibilities should be taken over, but feel free to make adjustments, as necessary.
The attached document is shared with cooperating teachers and supervisors at the beginning of every student teaching semester. It summarizes the fact that some student teachers may be taking part in face-to-face, hybrid, or entirely online collaborations during the student teaching semester. It also discusses that supervision of these student teachers may be done remotely too.
