Our New Citizens! Which are you?
The quiz for this is currently underconstruction!
From the Desk of the Head of the Science Department
Greetings new recruits, or should I say, hello to the citizens of New Earth? Some of our group are starting to refer to our homeland as 'Eaglefall', but I think this is a bit premature. Our environment is endangered, true, but we have - as yet - managed to not completely blow things up. Our civilization still stands. I'm an optimist by nature and have no plans on changing any time soon. No matter what changes.

I'll introduce myself in a moment but feel I must answer the question most frequently asked of me. How can I write a zoological index of creatures that do not yet exist?
My first question to you is, are you sure they don't exist? Or is this just what they want you to think? We won't argue the politics of a major cover-up operation here. That's for other people better versed in the subject to debate, I simply ask you to consider all the strange things happening in the world today and think about it.
Secondly, we have numerous seers and mages reporting details from their visions and vivid dreams. Don't scoff. Some of our mages have returned from their astral projection 'Travel' with wounds and injuries. We have witnesses. They have scars. These 'Spiritwalkers' and others we've been in touch with all communicate the same stories and descriptions. There has been too much coincidence, from completely disconnected and unrelated sources, for there not to be some truth to these visions.
Third, obviously we cannot validate or prove anything until we have physical evidence in hand. I understand your skepticism and, as a researcher myself, I appreciate and respect your doubts. All I ask of you is to consider the fact that it doesn't hurt to read and be prepared.
We have prepared study guides and educational material in the form of a series of epic fantasy novels. Read them. Learn. If you are right and this is all just a misunderstanding on our part, at least you will have been entertained for a time. However, what if we are right? We want you to be prepared.
To survive the future that is to come, we must work together.

If you have arrived at this page without taking the 'Know Before you Grow' assessment test mentioned on the Home page, we recommend you take a few minutes to do so now. It will make the instructions and information on this page more interesting and meaningful.
Knowledge is Power - Let Education be your primary weapon!
Warning: Notes about the study guides are presented on this page, but it is our suggestion that the novels are read in order so not to ruin the experience with spoilers.
Education is the goal, but you should enjoy the adventure as well.
Falcons are the strongest and most fearsome of all the new races. Feral, wild, and predatory, they rule the sky and command the night. Falcons are the guardians of the skies, but they count the forests, shorelines, cities, and all else within their claimed territories as theirs to patrol and guard as well. They have very little need for sorcery - they do not use magic, they are magic. Their powerful wings, boosted by natural elemental energy, and their sharp talons make these warriors very formidable fighters.
They make their nests in the trunks of the sentient Great Oaks and prefer to keep to themselves. However, they do enjoy some of the finer things in life and will work with others for pay. With an overactive sense of justice, confidence born of strength, and their uncontested position as apex predators, they are often considered arrogant. Many fear these people - generally a wise thing to do - but they’re an intelligent race and form the strongest family bonds of all new people.
Falcons can’t swim, and they hate to be below ground, but they are powerful and are the only creatures of Eaglefall who do not fear the great swarms of carnivorous giant bats that hunt the night skies.
The men of this race are brutes who spend most of their youth developing tight bonds with their nestmates and fighting for nesting ground. The most powerful will take and hold the Alpha position. He will choose their queen, and if she accepts, the flock will mate for life. It’s nearly impossible for an outsider to be invited into the tight-knit family of a bonded flock, but once in, you’ve gained a loyal friend and permanent ally.

Falcons are present in all of our 'study guide' novels, however they are featured as primary characters in both Part 1 and Part 2 of Book 3 , "On Broken Wing" and "Angels in the Army"
Yes. I'm including humans in our index. Ours is not a new species, but our place in the Circle of Life has been reset and this is not necessarily a bad thing. Let's face it boys and girls, while still the most numerous, ours is no longer the dominant life form on the planet and we need to keep that firmly in mind whenever we head out into the changing frontier.
Now, don't go getting all scared or mad at me. I'm no expert on this phenomenon, (who is?), but I am a scientist and I find the changes happening around us to be quite fascinating. Humanity had its turn as the warden of Life of Earth and, if we're to be completely honest, we've done a fairly piss-poor job of it. The ecology of the entire planet is burnt out, bleeding, dying, and much of this is our fault. It seems Nature has tolerated enough pain from us and she's swatted us like a mosquito.
And yet, we persist as a species. Is it through pure stubbornness on our part? Or does Nature see us as a necessary and important part of the Balance of Life? We have a choice before us now - we either learn to fit in and play nice, or find out what happens if Mother Nature really gets mad.

Humans play major roles in all books - read the preview for the first book, "In Over Her Head" and meet Lori, a human warrior mage, and her friends.
Mages are still mostly human. I think. Other races too. A mage goblin is still mostly goblin, but different. I have no way to verify this theory, but I will assume there is some genetic testing that can show the details if only we had access to it.
There's one major difference between us: mages can manipulate magical and elemental energy while us regular people cannot. From what we understand, it's not a matter of learning or effort, it's simply a physical trait.
Mages can be any race. Goblins are generally the strongest, although not many reach the highest levels of Talent. Most mages are human - more humans equal more human mages - and the humans of the future are by far the most organized and educated. They even run a Mage's College.
It is believed most all Dwarves have some magic, but as individuals they tend not to be very powerful; they work in teams and consolidate their magic. Falcons and mer may also have Talent, however their biological needs make formal education difficult if not impossible.
Don't believe in magic? That's okay. We're still learning and we will learn together. From what our seers tell us, magic has always existed. We simply couldn't touch it before. However, as Life has struggled to live, it has directed and realigned the elemental and magical energies of our planet and brought them forward—bigger and brighter—until eventually they became more accessible to those beings and creatures who will need it to find new niches in our rapidly changing biosphere.
Keep watching. We'll see what happens next together.

Mages play an important part of all novels, Part 2 of Book 2 "Emerging Threats" takes the story to the Mage College in Mountain View
When not in full merform, these aquatic mutants seem almost human but do not be fooled. After falcons, the merfolk are the most animal-like and powerful of our new people.
On the best of days, the ocean is a brutally dangerous place to live and its newest citizens have had to adapt more than their bodies to survive the cold, dark depths. These people are strong, hardy, and fearless fighters. They have to be. Death comes swift and fast to the unwary in the deep waters of the open sea.
From what we have learned, merfolk of the future prefer to live beneath the water, but they also partner with land-based allies for trade and will live on the beaches with friends and family.
When their youth come of age, they may choose to stay or travel elsewhere to find their mates and new homes. They become bonded to their territory as adults and will spend their entire lives protecting and developing their chosen tribes.
Due to their physical abilities, they are excellent fishermen and often work with humans aboard sailing craft - an alliance of benefit to both races. On land, they farm the land and raise livestock.
They create large, very loving, family groups and are most comfortable in polyamorous family groupings which provide the most secure environment for their children.
Occasionally, a mer will present with magical Talent, but it is rare and usually associated with their natural element as Water or Ice magic.
Using their innate elemental magic they transform their tails into legs when they come to shore. Their gills close, secondary transparent eyelids fold back, the eardrums adjust, and nerve endings in the skin are muffled to protect the mutant when out of the water. It’s quite an amazing transformation and, while magic makes it all possible, if they perform this feat too often, they become very hungry. It takes fuel, biological energy, to power the change.
Unlike falcons, merfolk are rarely aggressive. They are a cooperative people who form commune-like villages and share all resources for the betterment of all, however, when their nests are threatened, or their home environment damaged or polluted, they prove to be ferocious warriors. These are people who live among sharks, orcas, and kraken. They do not frighten easily.

Merfolk are introduced in Book 1 Part 2 "Rise and Fight" and you really get to know them well in both parts of Book 4, "To Swim Alone" and "A Fish Out of Water". You also have a completely separate story to read in the Vella story "A Tail to Tell"
Also known as "The People" or "The People of the Earth" our new dwarven mutants named themselves after the dwarves of classic fantasy tales. Their magic is stone and nature based and they are most at ease living in the calm, dark embrace of the Earth itself.
A short and sturdy physique lends itself to life in caverns and tunnels below ground. They are a private people and not a lot is known about them. Our seers were not able to learn as much about them as other races. The dwarves simply do not talk about their private lives. Rumor says that, although they are not fighters, they are as hard as the stone they live within and not easily defeated in battle. They can live for over two centuries.
The People maintain trader villages where visitors sell their wares in exchange for the stone, metal, and herbal products the Dwarves are famous for. Outsiders are not invited into private homes.
It is believed all dwarves possess some magic, but they are often very weak as individual magic users. Legends say that working in teams allows them to accomplish great feats of engineering in an astonishingly short period of time, but it is more usual for smaller groups of these 'Stoneweavers' to work on projects at a slower pace.
Mysterious, private, and powerful, they are a peaceful, pacifistic people and are more likely than not to fade away during a confrontation than fight, although they can and will defend themselves and those they call friends.

We meet Dwarves for the first time in Part 2 of Book 2, "Emerging Threats" but really get to know Trak and his sister Sella in Part 1 of Book 4 "To Swim Alone"
It is a mild insult to call a goblin a squirrel, but they're so easy-going you might as well. They’ll likely instigate teasing and mischief with you anyway.
Like most of the new people, goblins are much stronger than humans and better adapted for life in the harsh wilderness. Their short finger claws help them climb trees, and they move through the branches almost faster than the eye can follow. They also have webbed wing-flaps, which allow for gliding and jumping in a magically enhanced parkour-like manner.
Goblins are covered in short fur and have partially prehensile furry tails. You could call them cute, but only do so if you mean it. They take everything personally.
They tend to dress in leather strips, garish colors, shiny things, a multitude of knives, and not much else. They are excellent hunters and are fond of using poisons. Think: adorable, but deadly. They are fuzzy assassins who live in trees.
Goblin communities are set up much like any human town, with civilians, military, priests, craftsmen, etc., working together, but without the actual physical structure of a land-based town. They have a lot of strong magic users, but very little formal education. They are guardians of the forests and, in general, will reject most technology as religiously taboo.
Goblins make good soldiers and hunters, although their high-strung and overly energetic nature generally presents as a lack of focus, making them better followers than leaders. Their enthusiasm makes them an asset in any endeavor if you can manage to keep them pointed in the right direction.
Goblins tend to form large family groups and live in villages high in the tree canopy. They are very religious people, treat the Great Oaks as gods, and their shamen and priests work together to lead and guide their tribes.
Highly social and quick to love, these people do not do anything halfway. Once they choose a side, they will go all in. You could not hope for a more loving and loyal friend, and you may not have a choice in the matter.

Goblins play an important parts throughout the whole series, but we learn of their loyalty in Part 1 of Book 3 "On Broken Wing" and of their village life in Part 1 & 2 of Book 4 "To Swim Alone" and "A Fish Out of Water".
We do not wish to alarm anyone, and please keep in mind that our assessment quiz is an experimental device and by no means proven completely accurate, however, if you have tested as 'Other Creature'... we have some concerns.
