Things start off okay, but it doesn't take long for her to realize she may have been a wee bit overconfident when she set off alone. In the ruins of an ancient city, where she runs into giant rodents, an old friend, and brutal barbarians, she is pulled deeper into the web of treason and betrayal threatening the people of Eaglefall, a wrong she'd love to help right, but first she must survive and make it home to Riverton. Unwilling to submit to ritual sacrifice, for obvious reasons, Lori and Durwin barely escape the ruins of the ancients only to find themselves hunted by hordes of voracious nighttime predators. Their only chance of survival is in the hands of a small band of merfolk who seem less than enthusiastic about saving them. Delivered into the deep to recover from their ordeal, Lori learns more about the ocean dwellers and their distrust of the citizens of Riverton. Not only had troops of the Frontier Forces fallen to treasonous betrayal, warriors of the Southwind tribe had been killed during an attempt to petition the wrong officials in the city about the pollution sickening their people and threatening their very existence. Discovering shared goals and mutual enemies, Lori heads back to Riverton and she doesn't return alone. The quest to free the city from the grip of corruption continues. As Lori and her boss plot to save Riverton and her harbor, they uncover deeds even darker than the deliberate lock-down of the harbor. Kidnappings and murder plague vulnerable citizens of Riverton and an apparent scheme to frame non-humans for the deaths of innocents brings the threat of even greater turmoil to the already troubled city. Unexpected romance adds to the confusion, as does Lori's growing reputation as a troublemaker. Certain powerful outsiders are not amused.

The Oaks are in trouble, and Magpie has sworn to protect them, but it's more than one woman can handle, no matter how sharp her talons are.
