For my interview I asked a professional from the field I am studying. I asked a Child Life specialist all about their daily life and how they got to be where they are today. Hannah Clancy, a CCLP in Johnson City, Tennessee, first informed me of the coursework she had to require in order to sit for the exam. She began with her standard Bachelor’s degree in Science and shared with me that you may choose any related field such as Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Psychology, etc.. While in her University Education, she completed ten additional courses in order to qualify for the internship program. The next step is to work a 600 hour practicum in a hospital shadowing a Certified Child Life Specialist. After finishing her internship, Hannah was then eligible to sit for her exam. After passing her exam, Hannah was officially a Certified Child Life Specialist and could apply for jobs in hospitals. Since being at Niswonger Children’s Hospital, Hannah has an in-site classroom in the hospital where she creates a learning environment for the children. She also utilizes her abilities outside of her classroom as she greets each child and family that enters the Pediatric unit. She helps them understand the procedure they are about to endure and does this by demonstrating on stuffed animals, barbies, and diagrams. This helps the children and their families feel comfort in a place that can be very scary.
During my interview Hannah explained a little about the site to incorporate my site visit experience. She explained how she was first involved in the pediatrics emergency department and then jumped around from psych, to surgery, and then back to peds- which she enjoyed the most. She loves peds because most of the patients there are either admitted for a long stay, or return quite often (which is also unfortunate). This means she is able to create deeper relationships with them and learn more about their preferences and what makes their stay at the hospital better.
Child Life Specialists fall into the middle level of hospital management heirarchy under "normal specialists"
Growing up as a healthy female in a friendly community, I am constantly reminded of others who do not have the same privledges. This analysis allowed me to take a step back and look at
While in our "peel the onion" small group, Matt, as well as my peers gave me insight as to where I can perform better in my Site Visit and Interview. They asked me questions like, "What is your community?, What issues are you having?, Who you interviewed?, Why is this important?. These questions allowed me to deepen my thoughts on my project and improve for my next presentation.
