Our founder, Josie Blohm, was trying to find a service project to start her junior year of high school. One day during Winter Break, she was making coffee and thought about what she did with her grounds. The Blohm Family, an already environmentally conscious and pro-gardening family, dumps their coffee grounds into their compost pile to be used later in their garden. While drinking her freshly made coffee, Josie wondered how she could bring this phenomenon to her community. The idea for Composting, with Coffee! was born. Josie is a hands-on learner, so while she wanted to educate students on the benefits of composting, she knew that in order to really learn, students had to do. Thus, creating compost piles in school gardens seemed to be the best route. Students and faculty alike would be able to contribute approved items to the compost pile, and after a waiting period for the compost to become viable, the compost would be applied to the garden beds to give nutrients to the soil, getting ready for plants.
