The Friends of Malawi Association was formed in 1969 to foster friendship, goodwill and understanding between the people of the United Kingdom and the people of Malawi.
Through the Charitable Trust Fund, we provide small grants to projects in aid of Malawi.
Many of the members have lived and worked in Malawi and wish to maintain their links with the country and with one another. We are a non-political group.
FOMA has supported Community Sports Leaders Africa for three years with £500 grants each year. The money has to be spent on sports infrastructure. Tony Mwathunga at Charles Metal Works in Chitipa has been kept busy constructing 5 a side football goals, an adjustable netball post and a cricket cage.
South Edinburgh Community Football Club have supported Community Sports Leaders Africa by recycling their old kits for Northern Malawi. In 2017 Lynn Mantle delivered a truck load of kit to Alnwick and a cheque for £250 from The Royal Bank of Scotland. In 2020 Andy collected a car load of kit from Paul Doig, the Community Football Development Officer at the club and Michelle Tierney from the club made a donation of £60 to help ship the kits. Click on the link to find out more about the club.
The Malawi Cricket Union and The Cricket Academy have been great partners in Chitipa since 2018. In early 2018 Andy contacted Vivek Ganesan the Chairman of the MCU and told him all about the cricket development project in Chitipa. He was impressed and agreed to support.
Cycle of Good offered Community Sports Leaders Africa space in their shipping containers that set off for Malawi every few months. It meant we could now send more kit for a cheaper price.
Cycle of Good is the latest initiative to join a wonderful hub of social enterprises created by the Krizevac Charity over the past ten years. Learn more here.
The Bee Hive Centre for Social Enterprises is supported by Krizevac. Learn more here.
Cycle of Good collect waste inner tubes and other products, ship them in containers to Malawi and give them to the tailors who carefully craft useful and beautiful items. The products are shipped back to the UK where they are sold. The profits pay to send more containers to Malawi and all surpluses directly fund the work of the children’s centre. It’s why we call it the Cycle of Good! Learn more here.
In May 2021 Community Sports Leaders Africa made a connection with The William Stewart Foundation based in Ibuluma Village near Chisenga in Chitipa District.
Their UK sister charity Changing Lives Malawi is busy publicising the project, raising funds, finding sponsors and collecting donations.
We are now connected and hope to work together in the future to train primary school sports teachers and young football and netball coaches in Chisenga zone in Chitipa.
In December 2024, Lottie's Way granted Community Sports Leaders Africa £600 to hold sports training courses in 2025.
