Dear Ms. Kadosh,
I’m writing to you regarding Friday’s Juneteenth Celebration at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church and the altercation that took place in your parking lot between you and attendees of the event, as well as what unfolded online in the following days. I understand you may have had concern for your business and patrons - in these difficult economic times, we are all struggling. If you are not aware, the person who took the video of you is receiving death threats and racially-charged threats of violence. I am hugely concerned by this, and rather than continue to stir vitriol and hate, I believe it’s time for us to come together and solve this as a community.
I would like to invite you to a mediated conversation about what transpired, and discuss the larger context of police harassment and violence both in our community and beyond. I trust that by coming together and listening to one another, we can begin the process of healing our community, challenging our implicit biases, and exploring alternative methods of problem-solving besides involving police--especially when we know Black folks are at highest risk when cops are called.
As a white resident and teacher in Seaside, I speak from the heart when I say it is our duty as a privileged class to hold ourselves and each other accountable to do the work of unlearning harmful patterns of racism in our society, beginning here at home. It’s undeniable that across the nation, white people are finally noticing how deeply entrenched racism is in our criminal justice systems, education systems, and in our own unconscious beliefs and unintended actions. To begin to address this legacy of injustice, we must be willing to challenge ourselves and to listen to our Black neighbors.
Restorative Justice Partners (RJP) has been asked to facilitate a mediated dialogue between you and the individual who took the video in your parking lot, either in-person with respect to social distancing, or online on Zoom. I hope that you will take this opportunity to rise to the occasion. Please let me know by Saturday June 27, 2020 if you are willing to participate and your availability so we can arrange a time for us to have this important conversation.
Thank you,
