Description: Wallenberg Park, located on Weber Street between Troy and Cameron, is home to our modest community garden. The park was named in honour of Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat who saved the lives of tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews in 1944, during the Holocaust. He issued Swedish passes to Jews in Budapest and sheltered them in safehouses. Shortly after, he was imprisoned by the Soviets and never heard from again. It was reported that he died in 1947 in a Soviet prison. He was posthumously made an honorary citizen of several countries, including Canada, for his humanitarian efforts during the Second World War. We continue to honour Wallenberg’s legacy by using his name for our garden.
